The association between cardiorespiratory fitness and risk of all-cause mortality among women with impaired fasting glucose or undiagnosed diabetes mellitus.
To evaluate the independent and joint associations among cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), body mass index, and risk of mortality from any cause among women with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or undiagnosed diabetes mellitus (DM). ⋯ Cardiorespiratory fitness, not body mass index, is a significant predictor of all-cause mortality among women with IFG or undiagnosed DM. Assessing CRF levels provides important prognostic information independent of traditional risk factors.

ReviewSympathetic neural mechanisms in human cardiovascular health and disease.
The sympathetic nervous system plays a key role in regulating arterial blood pressure in humans. This review provides an overview of sympathetic neural control of the circulation and discusses the changes that occur in various disease states, including hypertension, heart failure, and obstructive sleep apnea. It focuses on measurements of sympathetic neural activity (SNA) obtained by microneurography, a technique that allows direct assessment of the electrical activity of sympathetic nerves in conscious human beings. ⋯ Obesity is also associated with an increase in SNA, but the increase in SNA among patients with obstructive sleep apnea appears to be independent of obesity per se. For several disease states, successful treatment is associated with both a decrease in sympathoexcitation and an improvement in prognosis. This finding points to an important link between altered sympathetic neural mechanisms and the fundamental processes of cardiovascular disease.

Health care utilization and cost burden of herpes zoster in a community population.
To conduct a population-based study to assess health care utilization (HCU) and costs associated with herpes zoster (HZ) and its complications, including postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and nonpain complications, in adults aged 22 years and older. ⋯ The annual medical care cost of treating incident HZ cases in the United States, extrapolated from the results of this study in Olmsted County, is estimated at $1.1 billion. Most of the costs are for the care of immunocompetent adults with HZ, especially among those 50 years and older.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization to visualize genetic abnormalities in interphase cells of acinar cell carcinoma, ductal adenocarcinoma, and islet cell carcinoma of the pancreas.
To use fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to visualize genetic abnormalities in interphase cell nuclei (interphase FISH) of acinar cell carcinoma, ductal adenocarcinoma, and islet cell carcinoma of the pancreas. ⋯ FISH abnormalities of CTNNB1 due to trisomy 3 were observed only in acinar cell carcinoma. FISH abnormalities of genes implicated in familial cancer, tumor progression, and the 5-fluorouracil pathway were common but were not associated with specific types of pancreatic cancer.
