Visual network alterations in brain functional connectivity in chronic low back pain: A resting state functional connectivity and machine learning study.
Chronic low back pain (cLBP) is associated with widespread functional and structural changes in the brain. This study aims to investigate the resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) changes of visual networks in cLBP patients and the feasibility of distinguishing cLBP patients from healthy controls using machine learning methods. cLBP (n = 90) and control individuals (n = 74) were enrolled and underwent resting-state BOLD fMRI scans. Primary, dorsal, and ventral visual networks derived from independent component analysis were used as regions of interest to compare resting state functional connectivity changes between the cLBP patients and healthy controls. ⋯ Our results demonstrate significant changes in the rsFC of the visual networks in cLBP patients. We speculate these alterations may represent an adaptation/self-adjustment mechanism and cross-model interaction between the visual, somatosensory, motor, attention, and salient networks in response to cLBP. Elucidating the role of the visual networks in cLBP may shed light on the pathophysiology and development of the disorder.

Visual responsiveness in sensorimotor cortex is increased following amputation and reduced after mirror therapy.
Phantom limb pain (PLP) following amputation, which is experienced by the vast majority of amputees, has been reported to be relieved with daily sessions of mirror therapy. During each session, a mirror is used to view the reflected image of the intact limb moving, providing visual feedback consistent with the movement of the missing/phantom limb. To investigate potential neural correlates of the treatment effect, we measured brain responses in volunteers with unilateral leg amputation using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during a four-week course of mirror therapy. ⋯ A similar pattern of results was also observed in extrastriate and parietal regions typically responsive to viewing hand actions, but not in regions corresponding to secondary somatosensory cortex. Finally, there was a significant correlation between initial visual responsiveness in sensorimotor cortex and reduction in PLP suggesting a potential marker for predicting efficacy of mirror therapy. Thus, enhanced visual responsiveness in sensorimotor cortex is associated with PLP and modulated over the course of mirror therapy.

Different patterns of white matter changes after successful surgery of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.
To explore the dynamic changes of white matters following anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) patients who achieved seizure-free at two-year follow-up. ⋯ FA changes after successful ATL presented as four distinct patterns, reflecting different structural adaptions following epilepsy surgery. Some FA increases indicated the reversibility of preoperative diffusion abnormalities and the possibility of structural reorganization, especially in the contralateral hemisphere.

Resting-state functional connectivity predicts individual language impairment of patients with left hemispheric gliomas involving language network.
Language deficits following brain tumors should consider the dynamic interactions between different tumor growth kinetics and functional network reorganization. We measured the resting-state functional connectivity of 126 patients with left cerebral gliomas involving language network areas, including 77 patients with low-grade gliomas (LGG) and 49 patients with high-grade gliomas (HGG). Functional network mapping for language was performed by construction of a multivariate machine learning-based prediction model of individual aphasia quotient (AQ), a summary score that indicates overall severity of language impairment. ⋯ The rsFC regions predictive of LGG's AQ involved the bilateral frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes, subcortical regions, and bilateral cerebro-cerebellar connections, mainly in regions belonging to the canonical language network. The functional network of language processing for HGG patients showed strong dependence on connections of the left cerebro-cerebellar connections, limbic system, and the temporal, occipital, and prefrontal lobes. Together, our findings suggested that individual language processing of glioma patients links large-scale, bilateral, cortico-subcortical, and cerebro-cerebellar functional networks with different network reorganizational mechanisms underlying the different levels of language impairments in LGG and HGG patients.

Brain microstructural development in neonates with critical congenital heart disease: An atlas-based diffusion tensor imaging study.
Brain microstructural maturation progresses rapidly in the third trimester of gestation and first weeks of life, but typical microstructural development may be influenced by the presence of critical congenital heart disease (CHD). ⋯ Collectively, these findings revealed brain microstructural WM development to follow the same organized pattern in critical CHD as reported in healthy and preterm neonates, from posterior-to-anterior and central-to-peripheral. Neonates with TGA and LVOTO showed the most mature WM microstructure before surgery and SVP-AO the least mature. Degree of WM microstructural immaturity was not associated with ischemic brain injury.
