N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids to prevent atrial fibrillation: updated systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Previous studies have suggested that n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) have antiarrhythmic effects on atrial fibrillation (AF). We aimed to assess the effects of therapy with n-3 PUFAs on the incidence of recurrent AF and on postoperative AF. ⋯ URL: http://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO. Unique Identifier: CRD42012002199.

We aimed to derive and validate a single risk score for predicting death from ischemic stroke (IS), intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). ⋯ A single prediction score for all stroke types can be used to predict risk of in-hospital death following stroke admission. Incorporation of NIHSS information substantially improves this predictive accuracy.

Prospective observational study of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators in primary prevention of sudden cardiac death: study design and cohort description.
Primary-prevention implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) reduce total mortality in patients with severe left ventricular systolic function. However, only a minority of patients benefit from these devices. We designed the Prospective Observational Study of Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators (PROSE-ICD) to identify risk factors and enhance our understanding of the biological mechanisms that predispose to arrhythmic death in patients undergoing ICD implantation for primary prevention of sudden death. ⋯ URL: http://clinicaltrials.gov/ Unique Identifier: NCT00733590.

Multicenter Study Comparative Study
Atrial fibrillation and outcomes in heart failure with preserved versus reduced left ventricular ejection fraction.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) are 2 of the most common cardiovascular conditions nationally and AF frequently complicates HF. We examined how AF has impacts on adverse outcomes in HF-PEF versus HF-REF within a large, contemporary cohort. ⋯ AF is a potent risk factor for adverse outcomes in patients with HF-PEF or HF-REF. Effective interventions are needed to improve the prognosis of these high-risk patients.

Evidence that acetylsalicylic acid attenuates inflammation in the walls of human cerebral aneurysms: preliminary results.
Inflammatory cells and molecules may play a critical role in formation and rupture of cerebral aneurysms. Recently, an epidemiologic study reported that acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) decreases the risk of aneurysm rupture. The goal of this study was to determine the effects of ASA on inflammatory cells and molecules in the walls of human cerebral aneurysms, using radiographic and histological techniques. ⋯ URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov.
