ReviewCoagulation Panel in Patients with SARS-CoV2 Infection (COVID-19).
The 2019 novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV2) is the causal agent of the newly-termed Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). In January 2020, the World Health Association (WHO) declared the CO-VID-19 as an epidemic. Abnormal coagulation parameters in COVID-19 patients currently are considered as prognostic factors of severity. Our aim is to summarize the current data available in the literature.

Sensitivity and Specificity of the Neutrophil-lymphocyte Ratio in the Diagnosis of Acute Appendicitis.
Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency; however, its misdiagnosis resulting in negative appendicectomy is not uncommon. Novel diagnostic methods will help reduce the rate of negative appendicectomy. We hypothesise that the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) will increase upon peritoneal involvement by inflammation, as it does in severe disease. ⋯ Inflammatory markers are useful adjuncts to history, examination, and radiological investigations in making the diagnosis of appendicitis. However, due to low sensitivity and specificity, they cannot be used alone. Calculation of the NLR has no additional benefit over the neutrophil count in diagnosis, or in distinguishing moderate and severe disease.

Simvastatin and Simvastatin-Ezetimibe Improve the Neurological Function and Attenuate the Endothelial Inflammatory Response after Spinal Cord Injury in Rat.
During a spinal cord injury (SCI), mechanical trauma rapidly leads to a blood-spinal cord barrier (BSB) disruption, neural cell damage, axonal damage, and demyelination, followed by a cascade of secondary inflammatory reactions. These inflammatory responses spread the damage to the neural cells and impair the recovery of neurological functions. In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy of simvastatin and a simvastatin-ezetimibe combination therapy in managing the endothelial inflammatory response in an SCI rat model. ⋯ The treatment groups showed significant reduction in ICAM-1 levels at 72 hours. The treatment groups, especially the combination treatment group, showed better neurological function scores. Simvastatin and simvastatin- ezetimibe all could improve the neurological function and attenuate the endothelial inflammatory response after spinal cord injury in rat.

Kidney Function, Nutritional Status, and the Left Ventricle Dysfunction Are Associated with Serum Uric Acid Levels in Patients with Heart Failure with Reduced Ejection Fraction.
The aim of this study was to assess the role of potential factors explaining variability of serum uric acid (SUA) levels in patients with chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) not receiving xanthine oxidase inhibitors and acetylsalicylic acid, with multivariate adaptive regression splines and fuzzy c-regression models. ⋯ Kidney function, nutritional status, the use of thiazide diuretics and the severity of left ventricle dysfunction reflected by serum NT-proBNP levels explain the serum uric acid levels variability in patients with HFrEF.

Clinical TrialBlood Transfusion Indicators Following Trauma in the Non-Massively Bleeding Patient.
Establishing transfusion guidelines during trauma resuscitation is challenging. Our objective was to evaluate indications for transfusion in trauma patients who emergently received ≤2 units of red blood cells (RBC) during the first hour of resuscitation. ⋯ Lactate and bicarbonate blood levels may be potential indicators for RBC transfusion need during trauma resuscitation in non-massively bleeding patients.
