Purpose The COVID-19 pandemic forced many hospitals to cancel elective surgeries to minimize the risk of viral transmission and ensure the availability of vital health resources. The unintended consequences of this action on the education and training of orthopaedic sports surgeons are unknown. The purpose of this study is to measure the impact of COVID-19 on orthopaedic sports surgery fellows, their education and training, and their readiness for practice. ⋯ Conclusions The COVID-19 pandemic has universally affected work hours and case volume of sports fellows. Nevertheless, most sports fellows feel prepared to enter practice and are generally supported by the confidence of their fellowship directors. The results of this survey emphasize the importance of the fellowship year in sports training and highlight the future of online education and simulation as useful adjuncts.

Sleep quality is influenced adversely or favorably by various intrinsic and extrinsic factors and sleep deprivation is a common problem facing doctors. ⋯ Presence of anxiety and or depressive features among physicians are the most significant independent predictors of poor sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction As the world's largest funding source for biomedical research, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supports physician-scientists with a discipline-specific R01 grant. Recently, scholarly activity disparities regarding investigator degree and gender have been highlighted in the medical literature among allopathic and osteopathic investigators of various medical backgrounds. We aimed to assess trends in internal medicine NIH R01 grants over the past decade. ⋯ MDs were awarded higher funding than PhDs ($466,494 and $421,576, p < 0.001), and females were awarded higher amounts than males ($462,771 and $444,868, p < 0.001). Investigators who held a second degree received more funding than PIs with a single degree ($476,693 and $439,693, p < 0.001). Conclusion In the decade under investigation, both gender and degree disparities existed within NIH R01 funding for PIs in the field of internal medicine, and osteopathic representation accounted for a paucity of R01 funding.

Introduction The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) requires all Match participants to adhere to a strict code of conduct known as the Match Participation Agreement, yet Match violations continue to occur. We sought to determine how interview experiences, including Match violations, impact applicants' perceptions and rankings of residency programs. Methods An electronic survey was sent to all accredited medical school Deans of Student Affairs and Association of American Medical Colleges Student Representatives for distribution to fourth-year medical students. ⋯ Respondents overwhelmingly agreed that PIC should either be eliminated or that programs should set clear expectations for PIC. Conclusions Match violations continue to occur, despite the NRMP Match Participation Agreement. With the notable exception of communication implying that applicants would match into a program, applicants overwhelmingly view programs that commit these violations negatively and often rank these programs lower as a result.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection has been associated with various complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, acute kidney failure, myocardial infection, and thromboembolism. Cold agglutinin syndrome (CAS) has been associated with other viral infections such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), but there have been only a few reports of cold agglutination associated with COVID-19. In this report, we describe a case of transient cold agglutinin elevation in a COVID-19-infected patient. ⋯ The workup for acute anemia revealed a positive result for cold agglutinins, direct antibody test (C3d), and agglutination of the red blood cells were apparent on the peripheral blood smear. Further, cold agglutinin titers peaked during the third week of the onset of illness and significantly declined during the fifth week. These observational findings indicate that cold agglutinin titers might correlate with the disease activity.
