What qualities do medical school applicants need to have?--secondary publication.
Doctors are asked to play the roles of both a healer and a professional. In dealing with this inherent demand, we should first ask ourselves if we are selecting students who show traits that would enable them to become a good doctor. The primary concern of this study was to identify the core elements of medical professionalism that will develop into professional competence that we should be sought in medical school applicants. ⋯ Medical professionalism can be categorized into three domains; professional knowledge, professional skills, and professional attitude. For the prominent differences in the recognition of the levels of professionalism elements in medical students by students and professors, further studies investigating the reasons for discrepancy are needed.

Metallo-beta-lactamase-producing Pseudomonas spp. in Korea: high prevalence of isolates with VIM-2 type and emergence of isolates with IMP-1 type.
Two Korean nationwide studies showed that metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs)-producing-Pseudomonas spp. are not rare. The aim of this study was to assess the trends of MBL-producing isolates among imipenem-resistant isolates of Pseudomonas spp. ⋯ Prevalence of MBL-producing P. aeruginosa has not significantly increased, but IMP-6 emerged in P. aeruginosa.

Case ReportsChanges of functional MRI findings in a patient whose pathological gambling improved with fluvoxamine.
Legalized gambling is a growing industry, and is probably a factor in the presently increasing prevalence of pathological gambling. We present a case of a 36-year-old pathological gambler who was treated with fluvoxamine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and who was assessed by functional MRI before and after drug administration. ⋯ This case demonstrates that the treatment response to fluvoxamine in a pathological gambler was observed not only by subjective self-report, but also by objective fMRI results. Therefore, fMRI may be a useful tool in the diagnosis and prediction of treatment response in patients afflicted with pathological gambling.

ReviewEpigenetic regulation of cytokine gene expression in T lymphocytes.
The developmental program of T helper and regulatory T cell lineage commitment is governed by both genetic and epigenetic mechanisms. The principal events, signaling pathways and the lineage determining factors involved have been extensively studied in the past ten years. ⋯ These include DNA methylation and histone modifications in epigenomic reprogramming during T helper cell development and effector T cell functions. This review discusses the basic epigenetic mechanisms and the role of transcription factors for the differential cytokine gene regulation in the T helper lymphocyte subsets.

Identification of proteins that interact with podocin using the yeast 2-hybrid system.
As a membrane protein at the insertion site of the slit diaphragm (SD) complex in podocyte foot processes, podocin has been reported to act as a scaffolding protein required to maintain or regulate the structural integrity of the SD. In order to identify proteins that associate or interact with podocin, we screened a mouse kidney complementary DNA (cDNA) library using a yeast 2-hybrid system. ⋯ Additional studies are needed to clarify the role and interaction with podocin and candidates.
