Case ReportsExpeditious Resolution of Giant Bullae with Endobronchial Valves and Percutaneous Catheter Insertion.
As bullae contribute to decreased lung function in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, effective decompression of large bullae is important. Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction via endobronchial one-way valves is less invasive and has a lower mortality rate than lung volume reduction surgery. ⋯ Three days later, imaging revealed marked decreases in the extent of bullae and atelectasis of the contralateral lung without any complications, including air leakage or pneumothorax. Combination of endobronchial valves and percutaneous catheter insertion might be helpful to accelerate the release of large bullae and to achieve improved lung function and higher levels of physical activity in patients with COPD.

ReviewDigital Biomarkers in Living Labs for Vulnerable and Susceptible Individuals: An Integrative Literature Review.
The study aimed to identify which digital biomarkers are collected and which specific devices are used according to vulnerable and susceptible individual characteristics in a living-lab setting. ⋯ As the digital biomarkers and devices that collect them vary depending on the characteristics of study subjects, researchers should pay attention not only to the purpose of the study but also the characteristics of study subjects when collecting and analyzing digital biomarkers from living labs.

Asthma is chronic eosinophilic bronchitis with the dominancy of T helper 2 (Th2) inflammation. However, patients with asthma and metabolic dysfunction have pathogenic and pathological differences from those with Th2 inflammation. Metabolic dysfunction, typically presented as metabolic syndrome, has several important clinical components including central obesity, insulin resistance or glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia, and vitamin D deficiency. ⋯ Additionally, vitamin D deficiency and insulin resistance have been regarded as aggravating factors of asthma control and airway remodeling. Recent clinical and in vivo studies have revealed the specific mechanisms of these components, which may aggravate asthma control and airway remodeling. In this review article, I summarize the recent studies and unmet needs for patients with asthma and metabolic dysfunction.
