This study aimed to observe the effect of recruitment maneuver (RM) and post-RM ventilation at different tidal volume on lung vascular diastole endothelial function in rats with acute lung injury (ALI). ⋯ RM with a high or low tidal volume ventilation could improve the lung vascular endothelial function of rats with acute lung injury, and RM with low tidal volume ventilation could lower significantly the injury of lung vascular endothelial diastole function in rats with acute lung injury.

Despite a large amount of resuscitation research, the survival rate after cardiac arrest remains low, and brain injury is the key issue. Neuroglobin (NGB) is an oxygen-binding heme protein found in the brain with a protection role against ischemic-hypoxic brain injury. Hemin is an effective activator of neuroglobin. This study was undertaken to assess the effect of hemin on expression of neuroglobin (NGB) in the cerebral cortex, neuro-deficit score (NDS) and pathological changes after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in rats. ⋯ There were increased NGB expression in the cerebral cortex, decreased NDS, and severe pathological changes after CPR in rats. Hemin treatment up-regulated expression of NGB, improved NDS, mitigated pathological changes, and alleviated cerebral injury after CPR.

The purpose of triage is to identify patients needing immediate resuscitation, to assign patients to a pre-designed patient care area, and to initiate diagnostic/therapeutic measures as appropriate. This study aimed to use emergency severity index (ESI) in a pediatric emergency room. ⋯ In pediatric emergency rooms, ESI is a suitable tool for identifying severe cases and then immediate interventions can be performed accordingly.

Airway management in the emergency department is a critical intervention that requires both standard techniques and rescue techniques to ensure a high rate of success. Recently, video laryngoscope (VL) systems have become increasingly common in many large urban EDs, but these systems may exceed the budgets of smaller rural EDs and EMS services and the Airtraq optical laryngoscope (OL) may provide an effective, low-cost alternative. We hypothesized that laryngeal view and time to endothracheal tube placement for OL and VL intubations would not be significantly different. ⋯ The Airtraq OL and the Storz VL yielded similar laryngeal views in the lightly embalmed cadaver model. Time to endotracheal tube placement, however, was less for the VL.

High-volume hemofiltration (HVHF) is technically possible in severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) patients complicated with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Continuous HVHF is expected to become a beneficial adjunct therapy for SAP complicated with MODS. In this study, we aimed to explore the effects of fluid resuscitation and HVHF on alveolar-arterial oxygen exchange, the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score in patients with refractory septic shock. ⋯ HVHF combined with fluid resuscitation can improve alveolar-arterial-oxygen exchange, decrease the APACHE II score in patients with refractory septic shock, and thus it increases the survival rate of patients.
