16 women with prolonged pregnancy and indications to induction of labour were involved into prospective analysis. Sixty of them were given 50 micrograms of Mizoprostol straight into posterior vaginal fornix (only once). In 56 women the labour was induced by intravenous administration of 5 IU Oxytocin. ⋯ Non-significant higher effectiveness and significant faster induction of uterine contractions by Oxytocin was found. Mizoprostol administration significantly shortens duration of the first labour period. Eventually, time from the medicine administration until the labour in both groups was comparative.

A case of triple omental torsion in the 17th week of pregnancy is presented. A 29-year old woman, gravida 3, para 2 was admitted to the hospital because of acute right sided, lower abdominal pain. Clinical symptoms suggested acute appendicitis and/or peritonitis. ⋯ The omentum and appendix were excised. Further postoperative course and pregnancy was uneventful and the woman delivered at term. Clinical difficulties with the correct preoperative diagnosis of this rare entity are discussed.

Comparative Study
[Erythema multiforme in children versus Stevens-Johnson syndrome].
30 children treated between 1984-98 for erythema multiforme (versus SJS) in Department of Allergology at the Children's Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw. 25 children suffered from erythema multiforme minor and 5 suffered from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. Before symptoms of the illness 13 children had been treated with antibiotics and 27 children demonstrated different symptoms of infections, mostly viral. Drug therapies and viral or bacterial infections probably induce symptoms in patients susceptible to erythema multiforme or severe versus Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. ⋯ 1. Erythema multiforme (EM) rather seldom occurs in children. The Most commonly its course is benign (EM minor). In another type of erythema multiforme--Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (EM major), in which mucous membranes are involved, the course of disease and the prognosis are always severe. 2. Both viral and bacterial infections as well as administered drugs play the important role in the etiopathogenesis of erythema multiforme. 3. The treatment of erythema multiforme in children is symptomatic (general and local). In Stevens-Johnson Syndrome early administration of glicocorticoids is recommended. Children with bacterial infection (contagion, contamination) should be treated with antibiotic.

Predisposition to reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) is defined as personal susceptibility to produce and maintain an excessive reaction in response to nociceptive stimulation. There is suggested that certain psychological traits predispose one to develop RSD, however, some authors claim that emotional and behavioural disturbances are the result rather than the cause of this painful condition. The review of the literature concerning the relations between psychological factors and RSD is presented in the paper. ⋯ On the other hand, there is enough evidence in the literature to substantiate the view that psychological and emotional disturbances are secondary to persistent disease. These changes, however, are not characteristics for RSD but occur also in other patients suffering from severe pain of other origin. There is emphasized in the paper that psychological support has significantly positive effect in the treatment of RSD.

The case of the 33 year old woman with stab wound of the chest with penetration into abdominal cavity was presented. Due to injury mechanism the diagnostic thoracotomy was recommended. The operation confirmed the lung, diaphragm, spleen and kidney lesion. It was very interesting that patient with dangerous lesion of important organs had no clinical and radiological indications for emergency operation before.
