Comparative Study
Effect of sodium nitroprusside on cerebral haemodynamics during cross-clamping of the descending thoracic aorta in pigs.
To assess the effect of sodium nitroprusside on cerebral haemodynamics during cross-clamping of the descending thoracic aorta in pigs. ⋯ Sodium nitroprusside did not affect intracerebral pressure, sagittal sinus pressure, or cerebral flux during cross-clamping of the descending thoracic aorta. Increased cerebral blood flow rather than venous congestion is the most likely cause of increased intracranial pressure during cross-clamping of the descending thoracic aorta.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial
Immune and nutritional effects of early enteral nutrition after major abdominal operations.
To investigate the effect of early postoperative enteral nutrition enriched with arginine, RNA and omega-3 fatty acids on immunological and nutritional variables after elective curative operations for gastric or pancreatic cancer. ⋯ Early enteral feeding was well tolerated. Patients who received the enriched solution recovered both their nutritional and immunological status quicker than those in the other two groups.

To study the healing of midline laparotomy wounds. ⋯ Suture technique is a major determinant of incisional hernia in continuously sutured midline laparotomies. Simple adjustments in technique can considerably improve late operative results.

To compare the dimensions of the infrarenal aorta and the prevalence of undiagnosed infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms in the siblings of patients operated on for either infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm or aortoiliac occlusive disease. ⋯ The screening of male siblings (over 55 years old) of patients with infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms might be justified.
