Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyMulticenter, 4-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of sodium picosulfate in patients with chronic constipation.
Although it has been used as a laxative for many years, high-quality trials assessing the efficacy of the laxative sodium picosulfate (SPS) are lacking. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of 4-week treatment with SPS in patients with functional constipation as defined by the Rome III diagnostic criteria. ⋯ Treatment of chronic constipation with SPS improves bowel function, symptoms, and QoL and is well tolerated. The dose can be adjusted individually while maintaining benefit.

Randomized Controlled TrialCognitive-behavioral therapy for children with functional abdominal pain and their parents decreases pain and other symptoms.
Unexplained abdominal pain in children has been shown to be related to parental responses to symptoms. This randomized controlled trial tested the efficacy of an intervention designed to improve outcomes in idiopathic childhood abdominal pain by altering parental responses to pain and children's ways of coping and thinking about their symptoms. ⋯ An intervention aimed at reducing protective parental responses and increasing child coping skills is effective in reducing children's pain and symptom levels compared with an educational control condition.
