Evaluation of baroreflex function in young spontaneously hypertensive rats.
The literature describes contradictory data regarding the onset of the baroreflex reduction in spontaneously hypertensive rats. ⋯ Our results showed that 13-week-old spontaneously hypertensive rats presented reduced baroreflex function when tested with phenylephrine.

Practical use of a risk assessment model for complications after cardiac surgery.
The identification of risk factors for postoperative complications in cardiac patients with surgical indication may influence the therapeutic decision. ⋯ TUMAN's score was chosen as it uses variables that can be promptly obtained, classifies in the same system the most frequently performed surgeries and predicts risk of postoperative complications, in addition to mortality. Its continued use in this hospital has been able to identify the group of patients with increased risk of complications, especially infectious ones, although it was not useful in the prediction of individual risk.

Hospital readmissions and death from Heart Failure--rates still alarming.
Patients who require hospitalization because of decompensated HF represent a group of the most seriously ill individuals who evolve with high mortality and hospital readmission rates. ⋯ HF remains a condition associated with high mortality and high hospital readmission rates. At the end of the first year, 44.5% of these patients had not needed to visit the ER or had died, which indicates that we should provide HF patients with the best possible care in an attempt to change the natural course of this increasingly frequent syndrome.

Randomized Controlled TrialQuality of life after on-pump and off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting surgery.
Coronary artery bypass grafting techniques without using cardiopulmonary bypass (off-pump CABG) result in less systemic damage, less clinical complications, less time spent in the intensive care unit, and shorter hospital stays, thereby raising the perspective of improved quality of life (QOL) for patients. ⋯ Progressive enhancement in quality of life and early return to work were observed for all patients, regardless of the surgical technique used. Save for a greater improvement in physical functioning and role limitations due to physical problems experienced by male patients, no statistically significant differences were found in the other domains between groups.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of local anesthetics with and without vasoconstrictor agent in patients with ventricular arrhythmias.
The routine use of local anesthetics associated to vasoconstrictors for the dental treatment of patients with cardiopathies is still controversial, due to the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects. ⋯ The results suggest that prilocaine 3% associated to a felypressin 0.03 IU/ml can be safely used in patients with Chagas' disease or coronariopathy with complex ventricular arrhythmia.
