Biography Historical Article[Physicians facing Paracelsus. Final thoughts at an art exhibit for physicians in honor of the 500th anniversary of Paracelsus in Old Bad Pfäfers on 18 September 1993].
The symposium for physicians in the Old Bad Pfäfers in honor of the 500th anniversary of Paracelsus' was framed by an art-exhibition with art-works from eleven amateur artists. Nine physicians, one psychologist/psychotherapist and one nurse met for the exhibition in order to get involved intensively with the personality of the medical colleague, natural scientist and philosopher Theophrast von Hohenheim. ⋯ The artists have briefly been introduced during the opening session. The importance of the 'imagination' and of the creative work of a physician are emphasized.

Paracelsus stayed in Bad Pfäfers in 1535, but he was engaged with this thermal springs in a publication before that. One may assume August 31st 1535 as reliable date for his stay in Pfäfers. Only few details are known about this stay. ⋯ For abbot Johann Jakob Russinger of Pfäfers living at that time, Paracelsus wrote a report, a medical consilium, in which he particularly stressed the stomach problems of the abbot. This paper preserved in the archives of the abbey of Pfäfers (today in the archives of the abbey of St. Gallen) represents the last autographic writing of the famous physician.

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a new semi-invasive diagnostic tool in cardiology. We studied tolerance of TEE. 95 out of 121 consecutive patients were interviewed using a detailed, structured questionnaire (42 questions). Most patients (97%) received midazolam prior to TEE. ⋯ Females were more often afraid of TEE (53%) and the endoscope (56%) than males (35% and 23%, p < 0.08 and p < 0.002) and also disliked the endoscope more often (42%) than men (19%, p < 0.03). Some women complained about headaches after TEE (10%), whereas men did not (p < 0.05). Thus, TEE, after premedication with midazolam, is subjectively well tolerated.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
