Since the end of 2019, a new disease outbreak has been spreading worldwide, after starting from Wuhan, China. The viral pathogen responsible for the disease was named as SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), and for the illness the acronym COVID-19 was coined (COronaVIrus Disease 2019). Viral pathogenesis, epidemiology, and clinics are still somewhat obscure, when occurring during childhood the most. The aim of this study was to evaluate the features of liver involvement and damage in course of COVID-19. ⋯ In conclusion, liver involvement during COVID-19 is likely due to a multifactorial origin. An aberrant immune system reaction to SARS-CoV-2 is probably the most important underlying trigger, though more extended studies are needed for a definitive confirmation. The markers of liver injury should be carefully in each patient admitted for COVID-19: in fact, in case of altered hepatic markers, a specific therapy to protect liver is needed.

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs) are a complex cluster of synthetic derivatives of testosterone. AAS abuse is considered a major public health issue since it has increased among young/adolescent males. The use of steroids has a prevalence rate of 14% in young athletes and 30-75% in professional athletes or bodybuilders. AASs simulate the testosterone mechanism, binding the intracellular androgen receptor, and dysregulating the normal hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in the same way as exogenous testosterone. Abuse can produce several side effects on organs, such as the genital system. The physio-pathological mechanisms that cause AAS abuse-related, genital system disorders in humans are still not completely known. ⋯ The present review of the literature highlights how little is known about the action of AASs on the male genital system. However, although their use is prohibited in many countries, the black market for these substances is still very frequent. The scientific landscape still has a lot to invest in the research of AAS on the male genital system to make young people even more aware of the negative aspects of these substances, contributing to the reduction of these products in an inappropriate way.

Previous studies have shown that PRDX1 is upregulated in some types of malignant tumors. The role of PRDX1 in non-small-cancer lung carcinoma (NSCLC) remains unclear. This study aims to identify the role of PRDX1 in influencing in-vitro biological functions of NSCLC and the molecular mechanism. ⋯ PRDX1 is upregulated in NSCLC samples, and linked to tumor staging and prognosis. It stimulates NSCLC to proliferate by activating the Wnt/β-Catenin signaling.

Acute E hepatitis is usually a self-limited non-progressive disease; however, acute liver failure and death can occur in the presence of conditions such as pregnancy and chronic liver diseases. In immunocompromised individuals, such as transplant patients, acute hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection may evolve to chronic hepatitis with rapid progression to liver decompensation. At our center, serology for HEV is not routinely performed in transplant patients and serological status is investigated only based on clinical judgement. ⋯ As the detectable RNA window is narrow and an undetectable HEV-RNA result does not exclude recent infection and the transplant context per se represents a risk factor for chronic infection in patients infected with HEV, a routine diagnostic workflow including HEV should be taken into consideration, increasing awareness and knowledge of the basic and clinical aspects of the disease.
