Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyInfluence of intra-pocket anesthesia gel on treatment outcome in periodontal patients: a randomized controlled trial.
Compare the treatment outcome after scaling and root-planing using local anesthesia gel or injected local anesthesia. ⋯ Treatment outcome is not compromised by use of anesthesia gel in comparison to injected anesthesia. The same beneficial results for probing pocket depths and clinical attachment gain could be detected. The majority of patients prefer local anesthesia gel despite a slightly greater procedural discomfort.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyMetronidazole alone or with amoxicillin as adjuncts to non-surgical treatment of chronic periodontitis: a secondary analysis of microbiological results from a randomized clinical trial.
To evaluate the changes occurring in the subgingival microbial profile of subjects with generalized chronic periodontitis (ChP) treated by scaling and root planing (SRP) alone or with metronidazole (MTZ) or MTZ + amoxicillin(AMX). A secondary aim was to examine a possible added effect of chlorhexidine(CHX) to these therapies. ⋯ The adjunctive use of MTZ and MTZ + AMX results in a greater reduction in the levels of periodontal pathogens in generalized ChP subjects compared to SRP alone.

Comparative StudyNumber of teeth, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen and cardiovascular mortality: a 15-year follow-up study in a Finnish cohort.
To test whether the number of teeth, an inverse proxy for composite oral infection scores is associated with better survival. ⋯ Each increment of 10 teeth from the edentulous state was associated with a 27% improved CVD survival, independent of low-grade systemic inflammation.

ReviewReporting adverse events in randomized controlled trials in periodontology: a systematic review.
Reporting of adverse events is of paramount importance in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to guide the implementation of new therapeutic approaches in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of adverse events reporting in RCTs published in the periodontal literature. ⋯ Improvement and standardization of adverse events reporting in periodontology are needed.

Patient perceptions of buccal gingival recessions and requests for treatment.
The aims of this study were to verify patients' perception of buccal recessions and their requests for treatment. ⋯ This study shows that perception of gingival recessions and the patients' requests for treatment should be evaluated carefully before proceeding with decision making.
