Quality of bristle end-rounding on replaceable heads of powered toothbrushes.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the geometry and the quality of bristle tip-rounding using 14 different heads from powered toothbrushes. ⋯ A high standard of bristle tip-rounding is an important feature with respect to the safety of powered toothbrushes. Those products with a greater portion of unacceptably rounded bristles might cause more harm to oral soft tissues during use. The end-rounding quality of some of the products should be improved.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialAdjunctive subantimicrobial dose doxycycline: effect on clinical parameters and gingival crevicular fluid transforming growth factor-beta levels in severe, generalized chronic periodontitis.
At present there is limited data concerning the efficacy of non-surgical periodontal therapy supplemented with subantimicrobial dose doxycycline (SDD) in the treatment of severe, generalized periodontitis. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of adjunctive SDD therapy on clinical periodontal parameters and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) levels in patients with severe, generalized chronic periodontitis over a 6-month period. ⋯ These data indicate that combination of SDD with non-surgical therapy improves clinical parameters of periodontal disease and increases GCF TGF-beta1 levels together with a decrease in prevalence of residual pockets in patients with severe, generalized chronic periodontitis. Increased GCF TGF-beta1 levels following SDD therapy might suggest a novell pleiotrophic mechanism for tetracyclines to inhibit connective tissue breakdown.

Comparative StudySmoking cessation increases gingival blood flow and gingival crevicular fluid.
The purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of smoking cessation on gingival blood flow (GBF) and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). ⋯ The results show that the gingival microcirculation recovers to normal in the early stages of smoking cessation, which could activate the gingival tissues metabolism/remodeling, and contribute to periodontal health.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialQuadrant root planing versus same-day full-mouth root planing. I. Clinical findings.
The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that same-day full-mouth scaling and root planing (FM-SRP) resulted in greater clinical improvement compared to quadrant scaling and root planing (Q-SRP) in chronic periodontitis patients over a period of 6 months. ⋯ Following both therapeutic modalities, there were marked clinical improvements at both R1 and R2 (6 months) from baseline. The current study, in contrast to previous findings, failed to show that FM-SRP is a more efficacious periodontal treatment modality compared to Q-SRP. However, both modalities are efficacious and the clinician should select the treatment modality based on practical considerations related to patient preference and clinical workload.

Randomised controlled trials and publication trends in periodontal research during 1980-2000.
To study publication trends, as well as the number and proportion of randomised controlled trials covering different areas of periodontal research (RCT-Ps). ⋯ The annual number of RCT-Ps increased substantially during 1980-2000, and a few clinical research areas predominated. Future research should give priority to areas where clinical evidence is scarce and where high-quality RCT-Ps are most needed.
