Case Reports[Vitreous hemorrhage after acute subarachnoid hemorrhage in cerebral aneurysm].
In four cases we investigated the rare phenomenon of "Vitreous hemorrhage after rupturing of cerebral aneurysms". We try to point out the etiology and mechanisms of hemorrhage as well as to discuss diagnostic measurements and therapeutic management.

Case Reports[Conservative or surgical treatment for foreign body injuries of the brain].
Presenting our patients with cerebral foreign body injuries since 1954 we find that surgical management is not absolutely indispensable. Criteria for conservative management are presented with illustrative cases.

Case Reports[Intraoperative monitoring with evoked potentials in spinal interventions].
This review article delineates the physiology and methodological principles of somatosensory (SEP) and motor evoked potentials (MEP), as well as our own results in 40 patients monitored during spinal surgery. In 29 patients an intraoperative SEP and in 15 patients a MEP monitoring was performed. Both modalities were applied in 4 patients. 19 patients had an intramedullary tumor, 15 patients had an intradural extramedullary tumor, 4 patients had an extradural mass lesion, and 2 patients had a spinal arteriovenous malformation. ⋯ Our results show that intraoperative spinal cord monitoring with both SEP and MEP can supply helpful information on neural integrity. The choice of the evoked potential modality to be used and the choice of the sites of stimulation and recording depends on individual pathoanatomical findings and on the operative procedure required. Intraoperative evoked potential monitoring is indispensable during high risk spinal surgery such as surgery for intramedullary tumor or for mass lesions above C5.

The case of a 36-year-old patient with an intramedullary neurinoma of the thoracic spine without Recklinghausen's disease is presented. The intramedullary neurinoma is a very rare condition. Only 33 cases have been reported in the literature. ⋯ The case described here was diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Histologically, the tumor showed all features characteristic of a neurinoma. Postoperatively, the patient is nearly without complaints.

Effect of gammahydroxybutyrate on intracranial pressure, mean systemic arterial pressure and cerebral perfusion pressure in experimentally induced brain oedema of the rat.
In the treatment of raised intracranial pressure (ICP) an agent is needed which can similarly reduce ICP and protect the brain without reducing systematic arterial pressure and cerebral perfusion pressure. Gammahydroxybutyrate (GHB) decreases cerebral metabolic requirement of oxygen (CMRO2) and glucose utilization rate. ⋯ The decrease in intracranial pressure is not due to a reduction in the mean systemic arterial pressure, but GHB does reduce the ICP while increasing mean systemic arterial pressure and cerebral perfusion pressure. GHB may be a useful adjunct to neurosurgical therapy in controlling elevated ICP.
