Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial[Hypervolemic hemodilution as a means of preventing homologous blood transfusion. A simple alternative to acute normovolemic hemodilution].
Acute normovolenic hemodilution (ANH) is timeconsuming and complicated, and has only a small effect in reducing the need for homologous blood. A simpler procedure is hypervolemic hemodilution (HHD). In the present prospective, randomized study, HHD is compared with ANH for its blood-saving effect. ⋯ HHD is just as effective as ANH for reducing homologous blood requirements, and is much simpler to apply.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical Trial[Treatment of tumor pain with flupirtine. Results of a double-blind study versus tramadol].
In a multicentric double-blind trial, flupirtine was compared with tramadol in the treatment of cancer pain. ⋯ Initially comparable in the two groups, pain was more markedly reduced after four weeks of treatment with flupirtine than after tramadol, the need for additional analgesic drugs also being less in the flupirtine group. The final general assessment by the attending doctors of the results achieved was "good" to "very good" in 63% of the patients on flupirtine, and in 46% of those on tramadol. Undesired effects were observed in 6% of the flupirtine patients and in 19% of those taking tramadol.

Review[Alcoholic delirium--a potentially life-threatening condition].
Full-blown alcoholic delirium is characterised by the symptoms of an exogenous psychosis and signs of vegetative dysregulation. Organic brain disease may initiate its development. The pathogenesis of the condition remains hypothetical. ⋯ This, together with improvements in intensive medical care, has reduced the mortality rate to 3 to 8%. Concomitant organic diseases may complicate and prolong the condition. A defective state is a possible outcome.

Acute leukemia is a disease of the elderly. In this group of patients, possible effects of chemotherapy must be taken into account and, as far as possible, the patient's general state of health stabilised prior to treatment. The complexity of the treatment is further increased by supportive measures, which should be applied both rigorously and with care. The therapeutic concept must take account of the quality of life of the elderly patient.
