Perioral injuries may have significant medical, dental and psychological consequences in children. Soft-tissue injuries are common-place, with the most common types being contusions, abrasions, lacerations and electrical and chemical burns. Each type requires specific care and follow through. ⋯ Children must also be screened for abuse and neglect. The common goal of treatment is to prevent infection, provide function and minimize scarring. Perioral injuries are preventable.
