The effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection combined with physical therapy for the treatment of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) has not been studied. ⋯ PRP injection can significantly improve pain, mouth opening, abnormal joint sound, and mandibular function in patients with TMJ-OA and has good repair effect on condylar bone defects. PRP injection combined with individualized comprehensive physical therapy can effectively control the medium- and long-term pain of patients.

In children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be involved, resulting in dysfunction of the masticatory system. Bite force is one of the variables that reflects the function of the masticatory system. The aim of this study was to compare maximum bite force in children with JIA, with and without TMJ involvement and with healthy children. ⋯ Children with JIA had a reduction in the AMVBF compared with healthy children. In children with JIA and clinically established TMJ involvement, AMVBF was more reduced.

The diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is based on patient history and physical examination, and may require medical imaging. Masticatory muscle palpation is essential to make a diagnosis of TMD. However, the response of masticatory muscles to mechanical pressure stimuli depends on many physical and psychological factors. ⋯ Increased somatosensory amplification is associated with decreased pressure pain thresholds at both trigeminal and extra-trigeminal locations in healthy individuals. SSA could be a potential confounder while diagnosing TMD and evaluating treatment outcomes.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is an autoimmune, chronic, inflammatory joint disease, affecting children and adolescents. Patients with JIA may have pain and fatigue in muscles. There are not studies evaluating the pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) of both masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in patients with JIA. ⋯ Patients with JIA have generally lowered pain threshold to mechanical stimulus, which suggests an effect of JIA on nocicepton-modulating processes.

Needling therapies in the management of myofascial pain of the masticatory muscles: A network meta-analysis of randomised clinical trials.
A network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomised clinical trials (RCTs) was performed aiming to compare the treatment outcome of dry needling, acupuncture or wet needling using different substances in managing myofascial pain of the masticatory muscles (TMD-M). ⋯ Based on this NMA, one can conclude that the effectiveness of needling therapy did not depend on needling type (dry or wet) or needling substance. The outcome of this NMA suggests that LA, BTX-A, granisetron and PRP hold some promise as injection therapies, but no definite conclusions can be drawn due to the low quality of evidence of the included studies. This NMA did not provide enough support for any of the needling therapies for TMD-M.
