To gain a better understanding of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) pain in adolescents, it is important to study the factors associated with its presence. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate potential predictors for TMD pain in adolescents, thereby including a diversity of factors from the biopsychosocial model to determine the strongest predictors. The sample of this cross-sectional study consisted of 1094 adolescents. ⋯ Logistic regression analyses showed that TMD pain was associated with sleep bruxism (OR = 1·8 95% CI = 1·34-2·34), awake bruxism (OR = 2·1 95% CI = 1·56-2·83), other parafunctional habits (OR = 2·2 95% CI = 1·17-4·08) and bodily pain complaints (OR = 5·0 95% CI = 3·48-7·28). Parafunctional habits and other bodily pain complaints may play an important role in the presence of TMD pain in adolescents. Of course, it remains unclear whether the observed associations between the investigated factors and the adolescent's TMD pain have a true causal linkage.

Recent studies showed that patients with chronic TMD pain also feature increased sensitivity in other craniofacial regions, and even in remote peripheral areas, suggesting that nociceptive processing is centrally facilitated in this patient population. The aim of this study was to investigate the existence of a negative correlation between the levels of non-specific physical symptoms and pressure pain thresholds measured by algometry at sites distant from the chief complaint of oro-facial pain in patients with TMD. A total of 20 female patients were evaluated comprising 11 patients diagnosed with myofascial pain (Group I of RDC/TMD) and 9 patients with arthralgia (Group III of RDC/TMD), with both reporting chronic TMD pain for at least 3 months. ⋯ The possible correlation between the dependent variable levels of non-specific physical symptoms and pressure pain thresholds measured by algometry at sites distant from the chief complaint of oro-facial pain was assessed with Spearman's correlation coefficient. Results were considered statistically significant, which stood a lower than 5% probability of occurring by chance (P < 0·05). A statistically significant (P = 0·02) negative correlation (-0·51) was found to exist between the levels of non-specific physical symptoms, only if including issues involving pain-related symptoms, and experimental pressure pain thresholds in patients with painful TMD.

The aims were to determine whether individuals with a past history of pain exhibit (i) altered jaw movement (e.g. reduced amplitude, increased jaw movement variability) in comparison with matched asymptomatic controls, and (ii) correlations between psychological measures (e.g. catastrophising) and altered jaw movement variables. Sixteen participants with a history of trigeminal neuropathic pain (TNP) and 15 age- and gender-matched healthy controls had jaw movements recorded during open/close, free gum chewing and chewing at standardised rates. All completed the Pain Catastrophising Scale (PCS), the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ), and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS). ⋯ In comparison with control, the TNP participants exhibited significantly greater variability, bias and/or mean square error during slow and/or fast opening, and significantly greater variance in velocity and/or amplitude during free and standardised chewing. There were significant negative correlations between PCS scores and velocity and/or amplitude of free and/or standardised chewing. This exploratory study suggests that individuals with a history of pain have altered patterns of jaw movements in comparison with asymptomatic control participants and that catastrophising may play a role in the manifestation of these altered jaw movements.

The aim of this meta-analysis was to investigate whether there are any positive effects of prophylactic antibiotic regimen on implant failure rates and post-operative infection when performing dental implant treatment in healthy individuals. An electronic search without time or language restrictions was undertaken in March 2014. Eligibility criteria included clinical human studies, either randomised or not. ⋯ There were no apparent significant effects of prophylactic antibiotics on the occurrence of post-operative infections in healthy patients receiving implants (P = 0.520). A sensitivity analysis did not reveal difference when studies judged as having high risk of bias were not considered. The results have to be interpreted with caution due to the presence of several confounding factors in the included studies.

The aim of this study was to examine the tactile sensory and pain thresholds in the face, tongue, hand and finger of subjects asymptomatic for pain. Sixteen healthy volunteers (eight men and eight women, mean age 35·7 years, range 27-41) participated. Using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments, the tactile detection threshold (TDT) and the filament-prick pain detection threshold (FPT) were measured at five sites: on the cheek skin (CS), tongue tip (TT), palm side of the thenar skin (TS), dorsum of the hand (DH) and the finger tip (FT). ⋯ Both for the TDT and FPT, TT and DH had the lowest and highest values, respectively. As for the FPT-TDT, there were no significant differences among the measurement sites. As the difference between FPT and TDT (FPT-TDT) is known to be an important consideration in interpreting QST (quantitative sensory testing) data and can be altered by neuropathology, taking the FPT-TDT as a new parameter in addition to the TDT and FPT separately would be useful for case-control studies on oro-facial pain patients with trigeminal neuralgia, atypical facial pain/atypical odontalgia and burning mouth syndrome/glossodynia.
