The tongue is responsible for compressing food against the palate and squeezing it into the pharynx during the oral preparatory phase of swallowing. Tongue pressure (TP), an indicator of tongue muscle strength, has been observed to decline with age; maximum occlusal force (MOF), an indicator of chewing ability, is correlated with TP. However, no study has investigated the relationship between TP and MOF. ⋯ As age and MOF are each associated with TP in both elderly and adult patients, age-related TP decline can be prevented with routine lingual exercises, even before the onset of old age. Additionally, MOF deterioration may indicate a decline in TP for elderly.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthralgia is a painful condition assumed to be associated with local inflammation. ⋯ Methylprednisolone provided no additional benefit for reducing pain, but caused more harm compared with saline following a single-dose IA injection in patients with TMJ arthralgia.

To determine if the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the left and right masseter and anterior temporalis muscles is altered by experimental right masseter muscle noxious stimulation during goal-directed isometric biting tasks in asymptomatic humans. ⋯ The findings suggest that experimentally induced right masseter muscle pain does not modify force or surface jaw muscle EMG activity during isometric biting tasks.

Autonomic responses to tooth clenching in migraineurs-augmented trigeminocardiac reflex?
Systemic autonomic changes are well known in migraineurs. Also, masticatory disorders are reported to be associated with migraine. However, if those phenomena are interrelated, and how, is unclear. Moreover, the knowledge on the autonomic responses to masticatory stimuli in migraineurs is limited. ⋯ The enhanced post-clenching vagal activation may represent a marker of the augmented trigeminocardiac reflex to stimulation of trigeminal area, sensitised in migraineurs. Our results support an involvement of autonomic mechanisms in migraine pathophysiology and are interesting in terms of interactions between migraine and masticatory disorders, elucidating one potential way how masticatory disorders may aggravate migraine.

Comparison of device-supported sensorimotor training and splint intervention for myofascial temporomandibular disorder pain patients.
This study was to compare the short-term therapeutic efficacy of device-supported sensorimotor training with that of standard splint therapy for patients with myofascial temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain over a treatment period of 3 months. We tested the hypothesis that both types of intervention are equally effective for pain reduction. In addition, the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the temporal and masseter muscles was recorded under conditions of force-controlled submaximum and maximum biting in intercuspation. ⋯ Moreover, sensorimotor training was significantly (P < .05) less easy to use than the splint. The results of this study confirm the pain-reducing effect of sensorimotor training for patients with myofascial TMD pain (GCPS I and II). This innovative active treatment might be a promising option for TMD pain patients.
