[The role of breathing control disorder in the development of carbon dioxide retention in patients with obesity hypoventilation syndrome].
To define the role of breathing control in the pathogenesis of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) retention in patients with obesity hypoventilation syndrome. ⋯ The depressed breathing control play an important role in the development of CO(2) retention in OSAS patients, and the disorder in breathing control may be secondary to hypoxia, hypercapnia and sleep disorder related to the OSAS.

[Changes of calcitonin reserve function in patients with primary osteoporosis].
In order to study the role of calcitonin (CT) in osteoporosis, the calcium loading calcitonin stimulated test (calcium element 3 mg/kg body weight, i.v., 10 min) was used to investigate calcitonin reserve function in 21 women with osteoporosis. The sesults were compared with those in 48 healthy women and 7 women with osteopenia. After calcium infusion, there was no significant difference in the basal CT, the peak CT value, the CT increase range, and the area under the curve (AUC) between pre- and post-menopausal healthy women. ⋯ In the osteopenia group, the basal CT value and its AUC were lower than those in the age-matched control group, but no difference was found in the peak CT value and the increase range between the two groups. The results showed no evident effect of menopause on calcitonin reserve function, but suggested a possible relationship between the decrease of CT reserve function and osteoporosis in patients with osteoporosis. Calcitonin deficiency has something to do with the development of osteoporosis.

[Acetaminophen absorption test for determination of diabetic gastroparesis and effects of erythromycin on gastric emptying].
The purpose of this study is to know the incidence of diabetic gastroparesis in diabetics and its relationship with diabetic neuropathy and to direct rational clinical treatment. Acetaminophen absorption test was performed for determination of gastric emptying function of liquid in 43 patients with diabetes mellitus (male 23, female 20, mean age 53.5 years). The patients were divided into two groups: diabetics with and without autonomic neuropathy. ⋯ Delayed GET in diabetics was normalized after erythromycin administration (from 47.63 +/- 6.74 min to 20.53 +/- 7.43 min, P < 0.01). The results indicate that this test can be used as an objective indicator for diabetic gastric autonomic neuropathy and gastroparesis. Erythromycin accelerates gastric emptying.
