What cannot be measured cannot be done; risk factors for childhood tuberculosis: a case control study.
Childhood tuberculosis is one of the major causes of childhood mortality and morbidity though much neglected within our National Tuberculosis Control Program. This case control study was carried out to identify the risk factors for tuberculosis among children. Cases (n=95) and controls (n=94) were selected from Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS) centers of four upazillas of Dhaka and Gazipur districts. ⋯ Those who resided in better in-house environment had 4.35 times lower risk of developing childhood tuberculosis (Odds ratio=.23; 95% CI for OR=.06 to .95) and children came in contact with source tuberculosis cases who were their relatives or neighbors were 5.26 times lower risk of developing childhood tuberculosis than being in contact with family members with TB (Odds ratio=.19; 95% CI for OR=.07 to .49). Contact Screening should be incorporated in National TB program for early detection and effective treatment of tuberculosis. Improvement of indoor environment and ventilation status of the bedroom might reduce the risk of developing childhood tuberculosis.

Role of red cell distribution width (RDW) in the detection of iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy within the first 20 weeks of gestation.
Iron deficiency anemia is common problem during pregnancy. Red cell size variation (anisocytosis) is the earliest morphologic changes in iron deficiency anemia. Red cell distribution width is a quantitative measure of red cell size variation and it can give the idea of early iron deficiency before other test to become positive. 190 pregnant women were included in this study. ⋯ Red cell distribution width had sensitivity 82.3% and specificity 97.4%. Whereas Hb level, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and peripheral blood film all had 56.6%, 29.2%, 68.1%, 15% and 38.9% sensitivity but specificity was 90.9%, 98.7%, 83.1%, 96.1% and 98.7% in the detection of iron deficiency. Red cell distribution width appears to be a reliable and useful parameter for detection of iron deficiency during pregnancy.

Role of serum procalcitonin and C-reactive protein in the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis.
This cross sectional observational study was done in the division of neonatology, department of pediatrics, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the year 2007. The study population was 50 newborns in total who needed evaluation of sepsis on clinical suspicion. The main objective of this study was to assess serum procalcitonin (PCT) as a better diagnostic marker than C-Reactive Protein (CRP) in neonatal sepsis. ⋯ PCT is a useful, sensitive and independent biomarker of neonatal sepsis. CRP measurement along with PCT measurement may increase the specificity. Though PCT measurement is comparatively expensive but an easy bed side promt convenient procedure for sick neonates in addition to CRP for rapid evaluation of neonatal sepsis rather than waiting for the report of blood culture.

Comparative StudyEvaluation of myocardial protection in off-pump vs. on-pump coronary bypass surgery by troponin I estimation.
This prospective non-randomized clinical study was done to compare Off-pump and On-pump myocardial revascularization by Troponin I release in patients undergoing first elective coronary artery bypass graft used to evaluate myocardial injury. ⋯ The lower release of CTnI in the Off-pump myocardial revascularization group indicates that the arrested heart coronary revascularization group causes more damage to the heart due to cardiopulmonary bypass than Off-pump myocardial revascularization group.
