Enhanced recovery in colorectal resections: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The study aimed to produce a comprehensive up-to-date meta-analysis exploring the safety and efficacy of enhanced recovery (ER) programmes after colorectal resection. ⋯ Enhanced recovery programmes after colorectal resections reduce length-of-stay and may reduce 30 days morbidity and increase 30 days readmission without increasing mortality.

Systematic review of laparoscopic vs open colonic surgery within an enhanced recovery programme.
Fast track surgery accelerates recovery, reduces morbidity and shortens hospital stay. It is unclear what the effects are of laparoscopic or open surgery within a fast track programme. The aim of this systematic review was to review the existing evidence. ⋯ Due to the present lack of data, no robust conclusions can be made. A large randomized controlled trial is required to compare laparoscopic with open surgery within a fast track setting.

A cohort study of results following elective colonic and rectal resection within an enhanced recovery programme.
The use of laparoscopic surgery coupled with an enhanced recovery programme (ERP) has resulted in hospital stays of 4 or less days for colonic and 6 days following rectal resection, in previously reported small selected groups of patients. This report analyses an unselected cohort to determine if such benefits are reproducible. ⋯ Laparoscopic colonic surgery in the context of an ERP offers reduced hospital stay and may confer a survival advantage over traditional techniques. These results confirm that previously reported benefits of laparoscopic surgery are reproducible within an unselected population.
