Lung ultrasound in early diagnosis of neonatal transient tachypnea and its differentiation from other causes of neonatal respiratory distress.
Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is one of the most common causes of neonatal respiratory distress (RD). However, distinguishing TTN from other causes of RD may be difficult during the first 12:24 h after birth. Lung ultrasonography (LUS) has been successfully utilized in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of neonatal RD. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of LUS for early diagnosis of TTN as well as differentiate it from other causes of neonatal RD in near and full term Egyptian neonates. ⋯ We found LUS to be a reliable and non-invasive tool for the early diagnosis of TTN and its differentiation from other causes of neonatal RD in near and full term Egyptian neonates.

Retrospective case-control study of necrotizing enterocolitis and packed red blood cell transfusions in very low birth weight infants.
The study objective was to explore the relationship between necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and packed red blood cell (pRBC) transfusion in very low birth weight (VLBW) neonates (<1500 g). ⋯ TANEC was common among NEC cases. PDA ligation was similar among TANEC and non-TANEC but lower in controls. Similar pre-transfusion hematocrits were found among TANEC and controls. Feeding abstinence rates were also similar between TANEC and controls.

Case ReportsOccult large epidural hemorrhage in a newborn infant after in-hospital fall.
Management of newborn infants fell in-hospital is especially challenging given the limited signs and symptoms of intracranial hemorrhage in this age group. We present a case of a four day old well appearing newborn infant found to have a severe epidural hemorrhage requiring emergent surgical drainage. Development of imaging protocols for newborn infants suffering in-hospital falls need to consider the potential consequences of missing actionable intracranial hemorrhage when relying on clinical observation as a management strategy.

Bereaved mothers' and fathers' perceptions of a legacy intervention for parents of infants in the NICU.
Legacy-making, actions or behaviors aimed at being remembered, may be one strategy to enhance coping and improve grief outcomes for bereaved parents and siblings. While legacy interventions have been developed and tested in pediatric and adult populations, legacy activities specific to bereaved parents in the neonatal intensive care unit remain unexplored. This study explored bereaved parents' perceptions of a digital storytelling legacy-making intervention for parents after the death of an infant. ⋯ Participants reported that a legacy-making intervention via digital storytelling would be feasible, acceptable, and beneficial for NICU parents. Study results support the need and desire for legacy-making services to be developed and offered in the NICU.

The relationship of cervical microbiota diversity with race and disparities in preterm birth.
Pregnant non-Hispanic blacks (NHB) have increased vaginal microbiome diversity compared to non-Hispanic whites (NHW) which may contribute to increased preterm birth. Cervical microbiome diversity is poorly characterized in pregnancy, therefore our objective was to correlate cervical microbiota diversity with cervico-vaginal inflammation by race and delivery timing. ⋯ Our findings suggest the cervical microbiota diversity during pregnancy differs by race. Larger cohort studies will further determine if altered cervical diversity is part of the pathogenesis of PTB and explains race disparities.
