Review Meta AnalysisTranscatheter mitral valve implantation for inoperable severely calcified native mitral valve disease: A systematic review.
Transcatheter mitral valve implantation (TMVI) for severely calcified native mitral valve disease recently emerged as a treatment option in patients deemed inoperable by conventional techniques. Yet no systematic appraisal currently exists characterizing this novel treatment paradigm. ⋯ TMVI for native severely calcified mitral valve disease appears technically feasible with acceptable initial acute and mid-term hemodynamic and clinical outcomes. The outcomes of an ongoing, dedicated global Sapien TMVI registry will shed further light on this evolving treatment paradigm.

Observational StudyLong-term survival and preprocedural predictors of mortality in high surgical risk patients undergoing percutaneous mitral valve repair.
To evaluate long-term survival in high surgical risk patients undergoing percutaneous mitral valve repair (MVR) using the MitraClip(®) system and to identify preprocedural predictors of long-term mortality. ⋯ Percutaneous MVR using the MitraClip system has favorable long-term survival rates in high surgical risk patients. Preprocedural NYHA functional class III and IV, elevated log-NTproBNP levels and advanced age predict higher long-term cardiac mortality and should be considered during patient selection.

Comparison of acute kidney injury classifications in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation: Predictors and long-term outcomes.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) was demonstrated to adversely affect outcome in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). We compared predictors for AKI and associated outcomes according to various definitions among patients undergoing TAVI in a tertiary medical center. ⋯ Different clinical characteristics predict the occurrence of AKI after TAVI when RIFLE and KDIGO/VARC-2 classifications are used. Both classification systems of AKI identify patients with increased risk for long-term mortality, with superiority of the KDIGO/VARC-2 definition, which should be used for AKI grading.

Randomized Controlled TrialUse of local anesthetic (0.25% bupivacaine) for pain control after pediatric cardiac catheterization: A randomized controlled trial.
To investigate the effects of local infiltration of 0.25% bupivacaine on post-operative pain and analgesic use in children undergoing cardiac catheterization procedures. ⋯ Morphine use can be reduced with the use of 0.25% bupivacaine given prior to femoral sheath removal and should be considered for post-procedural pain control for pediatric patients undergoing cardiac catheterization. This study is the first to contribute evidence to the effectiveness of 0.25% bupivacaine after pediatric cardiac catheterization.
