Para-medical workers (PMWs) are first contacts for suspected Swine flu patients and also the media to spread key messages regarding its prevention and control strategies. Present study was conducted to ascertain knowledge, attitude and practices regarding Swine flu among para-medical workers in a tertiary care hospital. A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted among PMWs during May-July, 2010. ⋯ Majority of the PMWs knew about signs and symptoms (89.03%), mode of transmission (91.56%) and route of transmission (91.98%) of Swine flu. Television (67.51%) was the major source of information. 75.53% and 58.65% PMWs respectively knew about organ of the body chiefly affected and type of specimen to be collected during Swine flu. 196 (82.7%) and 191 (80.59%) PMWs respectively knew about availability of vaccine and treatment against Swine flu. 94.09% PMWs stated that extra precautions such as use of face mask, frequent handwashing, use of gloves etc. should be taken while handling any suspected Swine flu case and 73.84% PMWs do take such precautions. 80.17% PMWs opined that epidemic of Swine flu can be halted at current stage. In the present study, PMWs possessed good knowledge, attitude and practices regarding Swine flu and this fact should be utilized while designing and guiding containment strategies against existing Swine flu epidemic.

Epidemics of Dengue fever (DF) and Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) are common in Southeast Asia. DF is defined & classified according to WHO criteria. Variable clinical manifestations of DF & DHF have been described in earlier studies. ⋯ Leucopenia (WBC < 4,000/mm2) and Hemoconcentration (Hct > 20% of expected for age and sex) were found in 38% and 5.26% of the cases, respectively. Results of our study indicate that apart from usual manifestations, sometimes unusual but clinically extremely important manifestations can occur which if not detected early can prove fatal. So a vigilant and timely approach is warranted.

The International Health Regulations (IHR 1969), replaced by IHR 2005 had been adopted by the World Health Assembly on 23 May 2005 and came into force on 15 June 2007. IHR 2005 are a legally binding agreement among World Health Organisation (WHO) member states and other states that have agreed to be bound by them. ⋯ The limitations of IHR 1969, which led to their revision, related to their narrow scope, their dependence on official country notifications, and their lack of a formal internationally coordinated mechanism to contain international disease spread. The IHR 2005, which is firmly based on practical experiences, has broaden the scope of IHR 1969 to cover existing, new and re-emerging diseases, including emergencies caused by non-infectious disease agents.

Bacterial meningitis: rapid diagnosis and microbial profile: a multicentered study.
Meningitis continues to be a formidable illness with high morbidity and mortality among children in India. The present study was undertaken to prospectively look for the prevalence of pyogenic meningitis at Gulbarga and to find out the utility of gram stain, Latex Agglutination Test and (LTA) and C-reactive protein in the rapid diagnosis of pyogenic meningitis from children. Over a 48-months period, 535 children with a presumptive clinical diagnosis of acute bacterial meningitis were investigated by direct microscopy, CRP, bacterial culture, latex agglutination test (L TA), cell count and cell type and biochemical tests. ⋯ Among 55 pretreated cases, only 05 (9.1%) CSF samples were culture positive, bacteria was observed in 36 gram stain smear, CRP was elevated in 16 CSF samples and 52 pretreated cases of suspected meningitis were diagnosed as pyogenic meningitis by latex agglutination test for detection of bacterial antigens. Many of the bacterial isolates were sensitive to gentamicin, cefotaxime and ceftriaxone and least sensitive to tetracycline and gentamicin. 13.1% of gram-negative bacilli were ESBL producers. To conclude, inclusion of latex agglutination test for detection of bacterial antigen in the routine diagnosis adds a valuable adjunct in the rapid and accurate diagnosis of pyogenic meningitis.

Chikungunya is a disease of zoonotic importance affecting man with non-human primates as a main reservoir. Recently the world has seen its outbreaks in Asia and Africa affecting large population. The disease has re-emerged after 2 long decades. ⋯ The disease shows epidemic pattern with severe arthralgia and usually without any mortality but in the recent outbreak it has shown mortality also. Thus it is the major cause of public health concern. Understanding the public health significance of disease, there is a need of continuous monitoring and surveillance of the virus in both human and animal population.
