Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyLaparoscopic Procedure is Not Independently Associated With the Development of Intra-Abdominal Abscess After Appendectomy: A Multicenter Cohort Study With Propensity Score Matching Analysis.
The aim of this study was to identify independent risk factors for postoperative intra-abdominal abscess (IAA) after appendectomy for patients with acute appendicitis. ⋯ The present study identified that laparoscopic procedure was not an independent risk factor associated with the development of postoperative IAA after appendectomy of acute appendicitis. Therefore, concerns of increased incidence of IAA because of laparoscopic procedure are unwarranted.

Multicenter StudyImplementation of the Spanish National Enhanced Recovery Program (ERAS) in Bariatric Surgery: A Pilot Study.
The essence of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programs is the multimodal approach, and many authors have demonstrated safety and feasibility in fast track bariatric surgery. According to this concept, a multidisciplinary ERAS program for bariatric surgery has been developed by the Spanish fast track group (ERAS Spain). The aim of this study was to analyze the initial implementation of this Spanish National ERAS protocol in bariatric surgery. ⋯ The Spanish National ERAS protocol is a safe issue with a high implementation rate. It can be recommended to establish this protocol to other institutions.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyAdmission levels of serum amyloid a and procalcitonin are more predictive of the diagnosis of acute appendicitis compared with C-reactive protein.
Acute appendicitis is the commonest surgical emergency, but its diagnosis can be elusive with a negative appendicectomy rate of 20%. The aims of this study were to investigate the potential value of the markers of acute inflammation, serum amyloid A (SAA), and serum procalcitonin (ProCT), in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in adults and to compare that with the commonly used serum C-reactive protein (CRP). ⋯ The measurement of SAA and serum ProCT on admission in patients with clinically suspected acute appendicitis seems to outperform serum CRP in aiding that diagnosis.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyLaparoscopic appendicectomy for complicated appendicitis: is it safe and justified?: A retrospective analysis.
Although laparoscopic appendectomy has some advantages over open appendectomy, the literature suggests conflicting results regarding postoperative complications for complicated appendicitis. ⋯ The morbidity rates, particularly for intra-abdominal abscesses and wound infection were less for laparoscopic appendectomy in complicated appendicitis than those reported in the literature for open appendectomy, whereas operating times and hospital stays were similar.
