Physical restraints practice in adult intensive care units in Egypt.
Physical restraints are commonly used in intensive care units to reduce the risk of injury and ensure patient safety. However, there is still controversy regarding the practice of physical restraints in such units. The purpose of this study was to investigate the practices of physical restraints among critical care nurses in El-Mansoura City, Egypt. ⋯ The most commonly reported physically restrained site complications included: redness, bruising, swelling, and edema. The results illustrated a lack of documentation on physical restraint and a lack of education of patients and their families about the rationale of physical restraint usage. The study shed light on the need for standard guidelines and policies for physical restraint practices in Egyptian intensive care units.

Comparative StudyPreparing for aging among older villagers in northeastern Thailand.
In the present study, we examined how older people prepared themselves in older age, by drawing on data from a qualitative study conducted in an urban area in Khon Kaen province, Thailand. Data were collected using observations, natural interviews, and in-depth interviews with 35 older people, concurrently analyzed using thematic analysis. ⋯ People actively prepare themselves for aging, and this appears to help them as they encounter life difficulties during their old age. Lifelong preparation strategies need to be studied further, so that locally-appropriate strategies of health care can be implemented for older people.

This study explored patient safety and falls, based on the experiences of home care nurses. Four focus group interviews were conducted with 20 home care nurses. The data were analyzed by content analysis. ⋯ The patient's autonomy was placed before patient safety. This study illustrates that home care nurses might be more aware of fall prevention in clinical practice. Additional research is recommended to shed more light on this topic.

Factors affecting the psychological functioning of Australian adults with chronic pain.
The role of resilience, for adults facing ongoing adversity in the form of chronic medical conditions, has received little attention in the past. This research investigated the impact of resilience and coping strategies on the psychological functioning of 87 Australian adults with chronic pain, using a self-report questionnaire. It included the McGill Pain Questionnaire, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, the Coping Strategies Questionnaire, the 36-item Short Form Health Survey, and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale. ⋯ In the final model for depression, resilience had a stronger association than pain severity. Resilience did not, however, influence individual's perceptions of their physical health-related quality of life. The link between resilience and mental health-related quality of life outcomes provides initial evidence for the potential application of resilience related interventions to pain management programs.
