ReviewMinimally invasive surgical approaches for temporal lobe epilepsy.
Surgery can be a highly effective treatment for medically refractory temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). The emergence of minimally invasive resective and nonresective treatment options has led to interest in epilepsy surgery among patients and providers. Nevertheless, not all procedures are appropriate for all patients, and it is critical to consider seizure outcomes with each of these approaches, as seizure freedom is the greatest predictor of patient quality of life. ⋯ Stereotactic laser thermo-ablation allows destruction of the mesial temporal structures with low complication rates and minimal recovery time, and outcomes are also under study. Finally, while neuromodulatory devices such as responsive neurostimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, and deep brain stimulation have a role in the treatment of certain patients, these remain palliative procedures for those who are not candidates for resection or ablation, as complete seizure freedom rates are low. Further development and investigation of both established and novel strategies for the surgical treatment of TLE will be critical moving forward, given the significant burden of this disease.

Depressive symptoms predict the quality of sleep in patients with partial epilepsy--A combined retrospective and prospective study.
Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases and has many detrimental effects on the patients' well-being as well as sleep quality. The aim of this study was to assess the subjective quality of sleep and influencing factors on subjective sleep quality in patients with partial epilepsy using a combined retrospective and prospective study design. ⋯ In patients with partial epilepsy, a higher depression score was the best predictor for a poor subjective sleep quality and increased daytime sleepiness.

Perceived efficacy of cannabidiol-enriched cannabis extracts for treatment of pediatric epilepsy: A potential role for infantile spasms and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
There is a great need for safe and effective therapies for treatment of infantile spasms (IS) and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). Based on anecdotal reports and limited experience in an open-label trial, cannabidiol (CBD) has received tremendous attention as a potential treatment for pediatric epilepsy, especially Dravet syndrome. However, there is scant evidence of specific utility for treatment of IS and LGS. ⋯ Although this study suggests a potential role for CBD in the treatment of refractory childhood epilepsy including IS and LGS, it does not represent compelling evidence of efficacy or safety. From a methodological standpoint, this study is extraordinarily vulnerable to participation bias and limited by lack of blinded outcome ascertainment. Appropriately controlled clinical trials are essential to establish efficacy and safety.

Validation of the Chinese version of the Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (C-NDDI-E) in West China.
We aimed to validate the Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (NDDI-E) for Chinese people with epilepsy (PWE). ⋯ The C-NDDI-E is a valuable instrument for screening MDD in Chinese PWE.
