Effect of lateralized temporal lobe epilepsy on the default mode network.
The default mode network (DMN) is composed of cerebral regions involved in conscious, resting state cognition. The hippocampus is an essential component of this network. Here, the DMN in TLE is compared to control subjects to better understand its involvement in TLE. ⋯ However, the posterior and anterior networks were found to be individually preserved. Lateralization of TLE affects the DMN with left TLE demonstrating more extensive networks. These DMN changes may be relevant to altered cognition and memory in TLE and may be relevant to right vs. left TLE differences in cognitive involvement.

Screening for major depressive episodes in Japanese patients with epilepsy: validation and translation of the Japanese version of Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (NDDI-E).
We validated and translated into Japanese the English version of the screening instrument Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (NDDI-E) to identify major depressive episodes in patients with epilepsy. A total of 159 Japanese subjects with epilepsy underwent a psychiatric structured interview with the Japanese version of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M. I. ⋯ Its Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.83 and a cut-off score greater than 16 provided a sensitivity of 0.92, a specificity of 0.89, and a negative predictive value of 0.99. The NDDI-E-J appears to be useful for primary care clinicians to screen for major depressive episodes in epilepsy patients. Routine use of this brief and self-administered instrument in busy clinical settings will likely improve management of depression in Japanese individuals with epilepsy.

MR-guided stereotactic laser ablation of epileptogenic foci in children.
For about 30% of epilepsy patients, pharmaceutical therapy fails to control their seizures. MR-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRgLITT) allows for real-time thermal monitoring of the ablation process and feedback control over the laser energy delivery. We report on minimally invasive surgical techniques of MRgLITT and short-term follow-up results from the first five pediatric cases in which this system was used to ablate focal epileptic lesions. ⋯ MR-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy has a significant potential to be a minimally invasive alternative to more conventional techniques to surgically treat medically refractory epilepsy in children.

Validation of the Spanish version of the Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (NDDI-E).
To translate and validate into Spanish (Spain) the screening instrument of major depressive episodes (MDEs), Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory in Epilepsy (NDDI-E), in patients with epilepsy. ⋯ The Spanish-Spain version of the NDDI-E appears to be a good screening instrument to identify MDE.

Cognitive dysfunction in people with convulsive seizures in rural China.
One hundred and forty-four people with convulsive seizures (CS) and 144 healthy controls were evaluated for cognitive function, using a battery of neuropsychological tests. People with CS performed significantly worse than the controls on the Mini-Mental State Examination, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, auditory verbal learning test, digit span test, verbal fluency test, and digit cancellation test. ⋯ People with CS presented with depressive mood and a wide range of cognitive deficits, particularly deficits in episodic declarative memory, attentional capacity, semantic memory, and mental speed. Years in education were positively associated with the cognitive performance of people with CS (OR=0.655, 95% CI: 0.486-0.882, p=0.005).
