Since Zika virus (ZIKV) has firstly been isolated in 1947, Uganda, outbreaks of Zika fever have been reported in many areas such as in Africa, Southeast Asia and America. Imported cases in China also have been reported. Zika virus belongs to the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, and include Africa subtype and Asia subtype. ⋯ Laboratorial Diagnosis includes nucleic acid detection, Serological test, and isolation of virus. Currently, no vaccine or medication exists to prevent or treat Zika virus infection. Preventive measures against Zika virus infection should be taken through prevention of mosquito bites and surveillance in epidemic area.

The Ebola virus belongs to the Filovirus family, which causes Ebola hemorrhagic fever (mortality, 25%-90%). An outbreak of infection by the Ebola virus is sweeping across West Africa, leading to high mortality and worldwide panic. ⋯ Several vaccines (e.g., rVSV-ZEBOV, ChAd3-ZEBOV) have been put into clinical trials and antiviral drugs (e.g., TKM-Ebola, ZMAPP) have been administered in the emergency setting to patients infected by the Ebola virus. Here, recent advances in vaccines and drugs against the Ebola virus are reviewed.

This study aimed to investigate viral infections and the prevalence of influenza-like illness (ILI) in Shijiazhuang, China, in 2011 and to provide a scientific basis for the diagnosis and control of respiratory tract infections. Throat swab specimens were collected from 483 cases of ILI who were outpatients in the influenza surveillance sentinel hospitals in Shijiazhuang between January and December 2011. All specimens were examined by multiplex RT-PCR for the following 15 respiratory tract viruses: adenovirus (ADV), human rhinovirus (HRV), human parainfluenza virus (PIV types 1-4), influenza virus A (FluA), influenza virus B (FluB), human enterovirus (HEV), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV-A and -B), human metapneumovirus (HMPV), human coronavirus (HCoV-229E/NL63 and -OC43/HKU1), and human bocavirus (HBoV). ⋯ PIV infection was mainly caused by PIV-3. The positive rate of HCoV-OC43/HKU1 infection was significantly higher than that of HCoV-229E/NL63. The leading five viruses that resulted in ILI Shijiazhuang in 2011 were HEV, ADV, RSV-A, HRV, and FluA, and these viruses have different epidemiological features.

The constant outbreaks of influenza in a global scale have aroused great concern all over the world. Vaccine has been the most effective and economic means against influenza. However, the broad tropism and high mutation of influenza viruses have limited the effectiveness of influenza vaccines. ⋯ At least three universal influenza vaccines have been tested in clinical trials. Moreover, changing the routes of vaccine immunization and immunization schemes could also improve the effect of heterosubtypic immunity. This review summarized the research progresses of universal influenza vaccines and provided our prospective on universal influenza vaccine research.

Since 2002, H7 subtype avian influenza viruses (AIVs) have caused more than 100 human infection cases in the Netherlands, Italy, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, with clinical illness ranging from conjunctivitis to mild upper respiratory illness to pneumonia. On March 31st, three fatal cases caused by infection of a novel reassortant H7N9 subtype were reported in Shanghai City and Anhui Province in China. With the ability of H7 subtype to cause severe human disease and the increasing isolation of subtype H7 AIVs, we highlighted the need for continuous surveillance in both humans and animals and characterization of these viruses for the development of vaccines and anti-viral drugs.
