There are still few studies on predictors of smoking cessation in Brazilian samples. Experimentation with tobacco during adolescence (ETA) may be one of the important predictors. ⋯ Early exposure to nicotine may lead to higher risk of continuing smoking after treatment, in adulthood.

The CHA2DS2-VASc score for predicting atrial fibrillation in patients presenting with ST elevation myocardial infarction: prospective observational study.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common form of supraventricular arrhythmia following ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The CHA2DS2-VASc and CHADS2 scores are used to estimate thromboembolic risk in cases of AF. Their usefulness in predicting the development of AF in patients presenting STEMI is unknown. ⋯ CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores predicted new AF in patients presenting STEMI.

Patient safety culture is part of the organizational profile of healthcare institutions and is associated with better quality of care. ⋯ The patient safety culture presented weaknesses and most of professionals had not reported any event in the previous year. A policy for improvement and cyclical assessment is needed to ensure safe care.

The relationship between preoperative vitamin D deficiency and postoperative hypocalcemia in cases of total thyroidectomy (TT) is a matter of controversy and may vary according to geographical scenarios and populations. ⋯ Deficient preoperative vitamin D levels were a significant risk factor for postoperative hypocalcemia. Preoperative oral supplementation should be considered, to minimize this risk.

Association between consumption of ultra-processed foods and serum C-reactive protein levels: cross-sectional results from the ELSA-Brasil study.
There may be a direct association between consumption of ultra-processed foods and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, under the assumption that the high glycemic index of these food products could stimulate the entire chronic inflammation cascade, along with an indirect association mediated by obesity. The types of food consumed, including ultra-processed products, strongly influence obesity, and are also associated with higher serum CRP levels. ⋯ Our findings suggest that the positive association of ultra-processed food consumption with CRP levels among women seems to be mediated by the presence of adiposity.
