RIPASA and air scoring systems are superior to alvarado scoring in acute appendicitis: Diagnostic accuracy study.
Acute appendicitis remains difficult-to-diagnose in spite of being a common acute abdominal condition. Early and correct diagnosis is essential either to proceed with early appendectomy or conservative approach so that complications and negative explorations can be minimised. Scoring systems can help in quick diagnosis and decision making. Though the Alvarado scoring is the widely used system, differences in diagnostic accuracy have been observed when it is applied to varied populations. ⋯ Appendicitis Inflammatory Response score probably is superior to Alvarado in the paediatric population because the variables scored are easy to apply to children, while Alvarado requires children to identify subjective symptoms which may not always be accurate. Appendicitis Inflammatory Response and Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Appendicitis are better diagnostic scoring system for acute appendicitis than Modified Alvarado. Also, both these scores can be easily calculated by complete history, detailed clinical examination and basic laboratory investigations.

Ultrasound-versus visual-guided transversus abdominis plane block prior to transabdominal preperitoneal ingunial hernia repair. A retrospective cohort study.
The transversus abdominis plane block is a regional anesthesia technique. Recently, its impact on early chronic pain and the cumulative need of analgesic medication following inguinal hernia repair is being monitored. In terms of effectiveness and patient safety, it remains unclear whether the approach should be conducted preoperatively through ultrasound guidance, or through intraoperative visual guidance.The study at hand aims to provide more evidence on this topic. ⋯ Due to our findings, we assume that the ultrasound-guided-transversus abdominis plane -Block may reduce postoperative pain and analgesic consumption more effectively than the visual-guided-transversus abdominis plane lock. Further prospective clinical trials are mandatory.

Perception and experience of academic Jordanian ophthalmologists with E-Learning for undergraduate course during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Electronic-learning (e-Learning) is a form of education that utilizes information and communications technology to access online teaching and learning. This study aims to evaluate the e-Learning experience among Jordanian academic ophthalmologists during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. ⋯ The experience of e-Learning was positive. Most believed that e-Learning would have a prominent role in the future of medical education and proposed blended learning programs.

The Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric surgery practice: A cross-sectional study.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020, routine clinical practices were affected, including pediatric surgery services. We aimed to compare pediatric surgery practices, including the number and types of surgery, either elective or emergency surgeries and outpatient services, before the outbreak and during the COVID-19 pandemic in our institution. ⋯ The pediatric surgery practices in our institution have been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including elective and outpatient services. This setback needs a comprehensive strategy to avoid morbidity from the neglected elective surgeries during the pandemic, including the proper comparison between the real risk of COVID-19 cross-infection and the benefits of elective procedures.

Mortality prediction model for the triage of COVID-19, pneumonia, and mechanically ventilated ICU patients: A retrospective study.
Prediction of patients at risk for mortality can help triage patients and assist in resource allocation. ⋯ This machine learning-based algorithm is a useful predictive tool for anticipating patient mortality at clinically useful timepoints, and is capable of accurate mortality prediction for mechanically ventilated patients as well as those diagnosed with pneumonia and COVID-19.
