This study compares the effectiveness of verbal modeling, symbolic modeling, and verbal suggestion in inducing nocebo hyperalgesia. It is the first study to examine the contribution of stress to observationally induced nocebo hyperalgesia. This study's experimental groups represented various sources of social information: a group of people participating in the study (verbal modeling), a single participant (symbolic modeling), and an experimenter (verbal suggestion). ⋯ The obtained results provide potential implications for minimizing nocebo hyperalgesia in clinical practice by, for instance, controlling patients' expectancies and stress levels. PERSPECTIVE: The study shows the role of pain-related information derived from other people in shaping negative treatment experiences in the individual. Because information from others has a particular impact on individuals experiencing stress, both this information and the stress level of patients should be monitored in the treatment process.

Chronic painful knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a disabling physical health condition. Alterations in brain responses to arthritic changes in the knee may explain persistent pain. This study investigated source localized, resting-state electroencephalography activity and functional connectivity in people with knee OA, compared to healthy controls. ⋯ Moreover, EEG oscillations were correlated with pain and functional outcome measures. PERSPECTIVE: This study confirms alterations in the rsEEG oscillations and its relationship with pain experience in people with knee OA. The study provides potential cortical targets and the EEG frequency bands for neuromodulatory interventions for managing chronic pain experience in knee OA.

Wireless transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) for chronic chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN): a proof-of-concept randomized clinical trial.
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) affects approximately 30 to 60% of people who receive neurotoxic chemotherapy. CIPN is associated with impaired quality of life and function and has few effective treatments. This 6-site, subject and assessor-blinded randomized clinical trial (RCT) was designed to assess 1) preliminary efficacy (ie, alpha pre-specified at .2) of a wearable, app-controlled, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) device for chronic CIPN and 2) feasibility of conducting a confirmatory trial within the National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) (NCT04367480). ⋯ A confirmatory RCT of TENS for painful CIPN is highly warranted. PERSPECTIVE: Daily, home-based TENS therapy demonstrates promising efficacy for painful CIPN symptoms in this proof-of-concept randomized clinical trial. Future confirmatory trial is warranted.

U. S. military veterans experience higher pain prevalence than nonveterans. However, it is unclear how the disparities in pain prevalence have changed over time because previous trend studies are limited to veterans using the Veterans Health Administration. ⋯ PERSPECTIVE: This article uses routinely-collected cross-sectional data that are nationally representative of U. S. adults to present changes in pain prevalence among military veterans compared to nonveterans. The findings underscore the need for improved prevention and pain care programs for veterans, who experienced a widening disproportionate pain burden from 2002 to 2018.

Since it emerged in the early 2000's, intensive education about 'how pain works', widely known as pain neuroscience education or explaining pain, has evolved into a new educational approach, with new content and new strategies. The substantial differences from the original have led the PETAL collaboration to call the current iteration 'Pain Science Education'. This review presents a brief historical context for Pain Science Education, the clinical trials, consumer perspective, and real-world clinical data that have pushed the field to update both content and method. ⋯ Finally, we provide practical examples of these strategies so as to assist the reader to drive their own patient pain education offerings towards more effective learning. PERSPECTIVE: Rapid progress in several fields and research groups has led to the emergence 'Pain Science Education'. This PETAL review describes challenges that have spurred the field forward, the learning frameworks and educational strategies that are addressing those challenges, and some easy wins to implement and mistakes to avoid.
