Examination of predictors of health related quality of life (HRQoL) with a focus on the ability of illness representations to predict HRQoL 3 months after hospital discharge in patients who experienced moderate to severe traumatic injury. ⋯ By understanding patients' illness representations, clinicians could provide information related to postinjury care to facilitate more congruent representations between expectations and real situations. By helping patients understand the important role early interventions might play in their recovery, clinicians might help patients develop more positive cognitive representations.

To investigate differences in mortality of intensive care unit (ICU) patients according to the ratio between total patient care demands and nurse staffing. ⋯ The findings indicate that not only differences among nurse characteristics, but also differences in patient care demands, are important when investigating the effect of nurse understaffing on mortality of ICU patients. Proper nurse staffing levels should be based on the estimation of total patient acuity, rather than on the absolute number of patients.

Heart failure is an increasing global health problem which adversely affects all aspects of a patient's health-related quality of life (HRQOL). ⋯ A comprehensive symptom management and prevention program that includes the described health outcome measures could lead to improved HRQOL for Thai heart-failure patients, and perhaps others.

Sucrose decreases infant biobehavioral pain response to immunizations: a randomized controlled trial.
To evaluate the effectiveness and age-related changes in analgesia of oral sucrose as a preprocedural intervention during routine immunizations in infants at 2 and 4 months of age. ⋯ Efforts to decrease the pain associated with immunizations can promote parental adherence to recommended immunizations schedules, prevent a resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases and mitigate adverse neurologic outcomes in infants.
