Differential item functioning in the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Pediatric Short Forms in a sample of children and adolescents with cerebral palsy.
The present study examined the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Mobility, Fatigue, and Pain Interference Short Forms (SFs) in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) for the presence of differential item functioning (DIF) relative to the original calibration sample. ⋯ Results suggest differences in the responses of adolescents with CP to some items on the PROMIS Mobility and Pain Interference SFs. Cognitive interviews about the PROMIS items with adolescents with varying degrees of mobility limitations would provide better understanding of how they are interpreting and selecting responses to the PROMIS items and thus help guide selection of the most appropriate way to address this issue.

Magnetic resonance imaging arterial-spin-labelling perfusion alterations in childhood migraine with atypical aura: a case-control study.
Atypical migraine with aura can be challenging to diagnose. Arterial-spin-labelling (ASL) is able to non-invasively quantify brain perfusion. Our aim was to report cerebral blood flow (CBF) alterations using ASL, at the acute phase of atypical migraine with aura in children. ⋯ MRI-ASL appears to be a promising tool for the diagnostic workup and differentials exclusion in paediatric migraine with aura. Constant and time-consistent non-territorial CBF modifications were found in our sample providing additional insight to migraine with aura pathophysiology. The authors encourage implementing this sequence at the acute phase of unexplained paediatric neurological deficits, with or without accompanying headache.

Paediatric brainstem encephalitis associated with glial and neuronal autoantibodies.
Central nervous system (CNS) autoantibodies have been reported in a range of neuroimmune diseases, but there has not been a systematic evaluation of autoantibodies in paediatric patients with brainstem encephalitis. ⋯ As determined retrospectively, 39% of patients had cell surface antibodies. The results did not suggest any relationship with treatment or outcomes obtained but it is possible that specific antibody detection could be a helpful guide to more intensive immunotherapies in some cases.

Surgical fusion of early onset severe scoliosis increases survival in Rett syndrome: a cohort study.
Scoliosis is a common comorbidity in Rett syndrome and spinal fusion may be recommended if severe. We investigated the impact of spinal fusion on survival and risk of severe lower respiratory tract infection in Rett syndrome. ⋯ With appropriate cautions, spinal fusion confers an advantage to life expectancy in Rett syndrome.

Clinical characteristics and neurodevelopmental outcomes of children with tuberculous meningitis and hydrocephalus.
Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a lethal and commonly occurring form of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis in children, often complicated by hydrocephalus which worsens outcome. Despite high mortality and morbidity, little data on the impact on neurodevelopment exists. We examined the clinical characteristics, and clinical and neurodevelopmental outcomes of TBM and hydrocephalus. ⋯ Neurological and neurodevelopmental deficits are common after paediatric TBM with hydrocephalus, and appear to be related to ongoing cerebral ischaemia and consequent infarction. The impact of TBM on these children is multidimensional and presents short- and long-term challenges.
