[Usefulness of certain hematologic parameters in the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia in children and women].
The sensitivity and nonspecificity of parameters for the detection of iron deficiency: mean corpuscular volume (MCV); mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH); serum iron (SI); total iron binding capacity (TIBC); transferrin saturation (TS); free erythrocyte protoporphyrin (Epp) and serum ferritin (SF) were studied in 78 children from 0.2-3.9 years old and in 165 mothers. In children, MCH and TS were the parameters that showed the highest sensitivity and lowest nonspecificity: 97% of the anemic and non-anemic children were identified as iron deficient by MCH less than 25 pg and/or TS less than 17.5% and 0 and 6% of the children without iron deficiency showed MCH and TS below these values. ⋯ MCH seems to be a sensible and specific screening test for detecting possible cases of iron deficiency in both maternal and infant populations. The best tests to establish the deficiency appear to be TS of Epp tests in children, and TS plus SF in mothers.

The author analyzes the existing relationship among breast feeding and socioeconomical level and degree of instruction of the mother. He also describes the causes for the interruption of breast feeding in a maternity where rooming-in existed. He stressed the importance of the motivation to the mother for breast feeding and the independence between levels of instruction and frequency of breast feeding.

The authors present their experience with correct placement of an endotracheal tube. Thirty children were intubated for different indications following the same method. The correct position of the tube was confirmed by chest films. ⋯ Auscultatory carina detection while giving positive pressure ventilation with ambu, when the respiratory murmur appears in the left hemithorax. 4. Tube withdrawal a distance equal to the patient's little finger length, leaving off the tracheal tube tip at an appropriate distance from the carina. The placement was found correct in 29 cases.

Landry-Guillain-Barré-Strohl syndrome or polyradiculoneuritis in children is becoming more common. The clinical picture is variable, it may be manifested by motor and sensory findings or by a combination of peripheral and cranial nerve signs and symptoms. This is a report of 60 patients observed at the DIF Children's Hospital between 1971 and 1977. The most significant early predictor of eventual incomplete recovery was the time required for improvement to begin after the maximum involvement was reached.

Comparative Study[Acid-base balance in the newborn infant. II. 3 technics of sample collection and the difference between amniotomy].
The study included 32 healthy newborns to evaluate the acid-base balance between two groups of newborns whose mothers underwent early or late amniotomy. The results were compared to the first study finding important differences, unquestionable due to amniotomy and age. ⋯ With the criterion pointed out in this work, the usefulness of late amniotomy and the stabilization of acid-base balance is established in newborns under 4 hours of age. Arterial blood is still being proposed to obtain an "ideal" acid-base balance and the arterialized capillary as a practical and useful method.
