Factors Affecting Incidence Rate of Exertional Heat Illnesses: Analysis of 6 Years of High School Football Practices in North Central Florida.
Although experts have advocated for regionally specific heat safety guidelines for decades, guidelines have not been universally adopted. ⋯ In the current study, the risk of EHI was greatest in the first 19 practices of the season and during practices with WBGT >82°F. As modifiable risk factors for EHI, increased vigilance and empowerment to adhere to acclimatization guidelines can mitigate EHI risk. Health care providers must continue to advocate for implementation of regulations and the authority to make decisions to ensure patient safety.

ReviewApplication of Platelet-Rich Plasma in Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
It is unclear how and which factors affect the clinical efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) applied during arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. ⋯ The results of this review indicated that arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with PRP significantly reduced the long-term retear rate and shoulder pain and provided improved long-term shoulder function in patients. Intraoperative application of PRP, use of leukocyte-poor plasma, and large to massive tear size contributed to a significantly decreased retear rate for rotator cuff repair combined with PRP.

ReviewAdverse Reactions and Clinical Outcomes for Leukocyte-Poor Versus Leukocyte-Rich Platelet-Rich Plasma in Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has gained attention as a therapeutic option for knee osteoarthritis; however, its efficacy varies widely. Leukocytes in PRP raise the concern of aggravating proinflammatory activity. To date, PRP has rarely been investigated with regard to leukocyte concentration. ⋯ Intra-articular PRP injection resulted in improvements above the MCID in terms of pain and function in patients with knee osteoarthritis up to 12 months. The risk of local adverse reactions appeared to be increased after LR-PRP compared with LP-PRP injection. The findings of this review can support the potential use of intra-articular PRP injection for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. In clinical application, clinicians need to consider selecting a specific type of PRP for knee osteoarthritis.

Opioid Prescribing Habits for Common Arthroscopic Procedures in Opioid Naïve Patients.
With the opioid epidemic and the increasing number of opioid-related deaths, there is growing awareness in the medical community regarding the dangers of opioid overprescription. As a result, there is a willingness among physicians to abandon old norms and adopt new data-driven prescribing practices. ⋯ This study provides important information regarding opioid utilization after common arthroscopic procedures. For ACLRs, knee arthroscopies, and rotator cuff repairs, by respectively prescribing 20, 10, and 20 pills postoperatively, the amount of unused medications would decrease by 60%, 47%, and 64%, respectively. We recommend prescribing no more than 20, 10, and 20 hydrocodone/acetaminophen pills (5/325 mg) for ACLRs, knee arthroscopies, and arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs, respectively.

Impact of COVID-19 on Recovered Athletes Returning to Competitive Play in the NBA "Bubble".
The global pandemic caused by COVID-19 has had far-reaching implications for the world of professional sports. The National Basketball Association (NBA) suspended active regular season play in 2020 after a player tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. No previous studies have examined the impact of COVID-19 on return to play in the NBA. ⋯ For players who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 prior to playing in the NBA bubble, the current study demonstrated that despite playing significantly fewer minutes per game, performance was not statistically different from either their pre-COVID 2019-2020 level of play or from their career averages.
