Preoperative Performance of the PROMIS in Patients Undergoing Hip Arthroscopic Surgery for Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome.
The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) is being increasingly evaluated for use in orthopaedic surgery. The performance of the PROMIS in patients undergoing hip preservation surgery is unknown. ⋯ In patients with FAIS, the preoperative PROMIS PF scores demonstrated excellent to good correlation with legacy hip-specific instruments as well as with HRQoL measures. No ceiling or floor effects were identified. Notably, of the hip-specific PROMs administered, the PROMIS PF demonstrated the weakest correlation with the HOS-Sports Specific subscale. Physical activity, BMI, and sex were predictors of preoperative PROMIS scores in our patient population.

Lower Back Injuries in National Collegiate Athletic Association Football Players: A 5-Season Epidemiological Study.
Low back injuries are common in collegiate football players and can frequently lead to persistent pain, reinjuries, and time lost from participation. ⋯ There was a relatively high rate of lumbar back injuries at the collegiate level (2.70/10,000 AEs), the majority of which were new injuries. About 18% of reported injuries were reinjuries. Although very few required surgery, a careful examination and work-up should be conducted to evaluate each injury. Regimented physical therapy and reconditioning programs are recommended to avert reinjuries.

ReviewReturn to Sport After the Surgical Treatment of Superior Labrum Anterior to Posterior Tears: A Systematic Review.
Controversy exists as to the optimal treatment of superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP) tears in athletes. There are no systematic reviews evaluating return-to-sport (RTS) rates after arthroscopic SLAP repair and biceps tenodesis. ⋯ Primary arthroscopic SLAP repair, arthroscopic SLAP repair with partial rotator cuff debridement, and biceps tenodesis all provide high RTS rates. Biceps tenodesis as an operative treatment of primary SLAP lesions may demonstrate an overall higher RTS rate when compared with traditional SLAP repair in older athletes. More, higher level studies are needed that control for age, level of activity, and type of sport (overhead vs nonoverhead) to determine the efficacy of biceps tenodesis as a primary alternative to arthroscopic SLAP repair in young athletes who present with type 2 SLAP tears.

ReviewEffects of Perioperative Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug Administration on Soft Tissue Healing: A Systematic Review of Clinical Outcomes After Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Surgery Procedures.
The effects of perioperative nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on soft tissue healing in humans have yet to be established. ⋯ Insufficient data are available to definitively state the effects of perioperative NSAIDs on soft tissue healing. Use of NSAIDs should be considered on a case-by-case basis and may not affect healing rates following either meniscal, ACL, rotator cuff, or Bankart repair. However, celecoxib (a selective COX-2 inhibitor) may inhibit tendon-to-bone healing in rotator cuff repair. Further research through clinical trials is required to fully determine whether NSAIDs have an adverse effect on soft tissue healing.

Impact of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction on NCAA FBS Football Players: Return to Play and Performance Vary by Position.
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are devastating for college football players. Although the change in functional performance of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football players after reconstruction has been shown to be negligible, studies have failed to analyze the statistical performance of these players upon their return. ⋯ Although offensive linemen were the least likely to return to play, running backs and receivers returned to play at a lower level of performance. The performance of defensive players was less affected by ACL reconstruction.
