Persistent left superior vena cava is rare and asymptomatic and is usually discovered incidentally during or after insertion of a central venous catheter. There is uncertainty as to whether or not the catheter should be removed after its malposition resulting in persistent left superior vena cava. We reported an unusual case of a breast cancer patient with a persistent left superior vena cava detected after a peripherally inserted central catheter insertion. ⋯ To ensure the integrity of the catheter, special follow-ups and tip position observations were carried out. The peripherally inserted central catheter was safe until the end of chemotherapy with no complications. Although the peripherally inserted central catheter tip was located in persistent left superior vena cava, given that the persistent left superior vena cava coexisted with a right superior vena cava with the similar lumen, the peripherally inserted central catheter could be used normally under strict attention.

Ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous catheter (USGPIV) insertion is an effective method to gain vascular access in patients with difficult intravenous access (DIVA). While USGPIV success rates are reported to be high, some studies have reported a concerning incidence of USGPIV premature failures. ⋯ The use of simulation-based mastery associated with USGPIVs, demonstrated lower failure rates than standard PIVs after 2 days and USGPIVs exhibited improved survival rates in patients with DIVA. These findings suggest that rigorous simulation-based insertion training demonstrates improved USGPIV survival when compared to traditional PIVCs. SBML is an extremely useful tool to ensure appropriately trained clinicians acquire the necessary knowledge and skillset to improve USGPIV outcomes.

Persistent left superior vena cava is an uncommon abnormality of the venous system. Most commonly, it is diagnosed incidentally during central vein catheterisation on the left side or pacemaker implantation. ⋯ The presence of the persistent left superior vena cava was confirmed by cardiac echography and angio-computed tomography scan. The 19-cm long tunnelled haemodialysis catheter was inserted into persistent left superior vena cava through the left internal jugular vein with good long-term function.

The recurrent arteriovenous fistula (AVF) intervention in the treatment of hemodialysis induces pain in patients. Lavender oil has analgesic, antimicrobial, and calming effects. This oil is widely used in patients to reduce anxiety and stress associated with pain caused by analgesics. ⋯ After inhaler and topical application of lavender oil, a significant decrease in the severity of pain was recorded for patients at the time of arterial insertion of needles.

Regular flushing and locking of totally implantable venous access devices (TIVADs) is recommended to maintain their patency when not in use. In this case report, a 73-year-old male patient received radical resection for rectal carcinoma in January 2010. A TIVAD was implanted in 2014 and a total of 12 rounds of chemotherapy of FOLFIRI was completed in 2015. ⋯ This is a rare infusion port that has not been used and maintained for 5 years. For the port that has not been used and maintained for a long time up to 5 years, the medical staff should not give up easily. During the COVID-19 pandemic, prolonging the flushing interval of TIVADs can be an optimal clinical strategy without negative outcomes.
