The aim of our study was to present our experience with the use of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) in pediatric patients receiving autologous or allogenic blood stem-cell transplantation. The insertion of the device in older children does not require general anesthesia and does not require a surgical procedure. ⋯ Our data suggest that PICCs are a safe and effective alternative to conventional central venous catheters even in pediatric patients with high risk of infectious and hemorrhagic complications such as patients receiving stem-cell transplantation.

To investigate the feasibility and safety of the peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) accessed via the superficial femoral vein in patients with superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS). ⋯ Real-time ultrasound-guided PICCs accessed via the superficial femoral vein at the mid-thigh is a new modified technique with low complications, which can be a feasible and safe alternative venous access for patients with SVCS.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
Ultrasound-guided radial artery catheterisation increases the success rate among anaesthesiology residents: a randomised study.
The palpation technique is generally used for radial artery catheterisation, but is associated with a high rate of failure and complications. Dynamic needle tip positioning (DNTP) is a new ultrasound-guided technique. We aimed to compare the traditional palpation technique with DNTP performed by four anaesthesiology residents. ⋯ Ultrasound-guided arterial catheterisation using the DNTP technique is superior to the standard palpation technique. This study favours the ultrasound-guided DNTP technique as the first choice rather than merely being viewed as a rescue procedure.

Ultrasound-guided costoclavicular approach infraclavicular brachial plexus block for vascular access surgery.
We report the use of a newly described regional technique, ultrasound-guided costoclavicular approach infraclavicular brachial plexus block for surgical anesthesia in two high-risk patients undergoing 2nd stage transposition of basilic vein fistula. ⋯ Ultrasound-guided costoclavicular approach can be an alternative way of providing effective analgesia and safe anesthesia for vascular access surgery of the upper limb.
