Effect of pressure support ventilation during weaning on ventilation and oxygenation indices in healthy horses recovering from general anesthesia.
To determine if pressure support ventilation (PSV) weaning from general anesthesia affects ventilation or oxygenation in horses. ⋯ Pressure support ventilation (PSV) weaning had a better respiratory outcome. A higher VT , VT /body weight, PaO2 /FiO2 ratio and a lower fR /VT ratio and Pe'CO2 were accurate in predicting the effect of weaning in healthy horses recovering from general anesthesia.

Use of a soluble epoxide hydrolase inhibitor as an adjunctive analgesic in a horse with laminitis.
A 4-year old, 500 kg Thoroughbred female horse diagnosed with bilateral forelimb laminitis and cellulitis on the left forelimb became severely painful and refractory to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory therapy (flunixin meglumine on days 1, 2, 3 and 4; and phenylbutazone on days 5, 6 and 7) alone or in combination with gabapentin (days 6 and 7). ⋯ Inhibition of sEH with t-TUCB was associated with a significant improvement in pain scores in one horse with laminitis whose pain was refractory to the standard of care therapy. No adverse effects were noticed. Future studies evaluating the analgesic and protective effects of these compounds in painful inflammatory diseases in animals are warranted.

Use of neuromuscular blockade with rocuronium bromide for intubation in cats.
To determine whether neuromuscular blockade with rocuronium bromide (RB) would improve endotracheal intubation (EI) conditions in comparison with topical lidocaine hydrochloride (LH). ⋯ The present study shows that, when used in cats anesthetized with XTZ, RB paralyzes the internal laryngeal muscles keeping the vocal cords in an intermediate position (paramedial) 60 seconds after being administered. RB is an effective alternative to LH to overcome the airway protective reflexes when performing EI but requires ventilatory support until the paralysis wears off.

Effect of ephedrine and phenylephrine on cardiopulmonary parameters in horses undergoing elective surgery.
To assess the cardiopulmonary effects of ephedrine and phenylephrine for management of isoflurane-induced hypotension in horses. ⋯ Ephedrine would be preferable to phenylephrine to treat isoflurane-induced hypotension in horses since it increases blood flow and pressure.

Determine if maropitant decreases the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of sevoflurane during stimulation of the ovarian ligament in cats. ⋯ The ovarian ligament stimulation model is suitable to determine MAC during visceral stimulation in cats. Maropitant decreased the anesthetic requirements during visceral ovarian and ovarian ligament stimulation in cats. Maropitant (1 mg kg(-1) ) decreases MAC by 15%; a higher dose had no additional effect.
