Effect of psychological stress on the salivary cortisol and amylase levels in healthy young adults.
Saliva sampling has the advantage that it is non-invasive, making multiple sampling easy and stress free. We examined the effects of psychological stressor and soother on the salivary cortisol and amylase levels in young adults, and compared the characteristics of these parameters. ⋯ Salivary amylase level was more significantly increased and reacted more rapidly than cortisol by psychological stressor, suggesting that it is a better index of stress. Furthermore, it is suggested that the enzyme is a soothing or relaxation index.

Biochemical analysis of saliva and taste acuity evaluation in patients with burning mouth syndrome, xerostomia and/or gustatory disturbances.
In the current study, we performed taste and salivary analysis on patients suffering from burning mouth syndrome and xerostomia or taste disturbances. ⋯ An oral neuropathy and/or neurological transduction interruption induced by salivary compositional alterations is suggested as the possible aetiology for the complaints. This report may add an important objective diagnostic tool to the clinician treating these patients.

Occlusion of dentinal tubules and selective block of pulp innervation prevent the nociceptive behaviour induced in rats by intradental application of irritants.
Application of irritants on the exposed dentine of the incisors has been shown to produce aversive behaviour in awake rats. This study aims to demonstrate that the observed aversion is due to the infiltration of irritants through the dentinal tubules and the activation of capsaicin sensitive fibres in the tooth pulp. ⋯ The present results confirm the hypothesis of infiltration of irritants to the incisor pulp through the dentinal tubules and suggest that the reported inflammatory reaction and hyperalgesia are mediated, to a large extent, by capsaicin sensitive primary afferents.

Saliva flow rate, total protein concentration and osmolality as potential markers of whole body hydration status during progressive acute dehydration in humans.
To identify whether saliva flow rate, total protein concentration and osmolality are sensitive non-invasive markers of whole body hydration status, we compared changes in these parameters with changes in body mass during progressive acute dehydration. ⋯ These data show that changes in saliva total protein concentration and osmolality, and to a lesser extent flow rate, are strongly associated with changes in body mass during progressive acute dehydration.

Connective tissue growth factor expressed in rat alveolar bone regeneration sites after tooth extraction.
To understand bone regeneration process after tooth extraction could be a clue to develop a new strategy for alveolar bone reconstruction. Recently, accumulated evidences support that connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is implicated in tissue repair of many tissues. In this study, we investigated the spatial and temporal expression of CTGF in the rat tooth extraction sockets. ⋯ CTGF was expressed at early healing stage of the rat tooth extraction wound.
