Responses of intra-abdominal pressure and abdominal muscle activity during dynamic trunk loading in man.
The purpose of this study was to determine and compare interactions between the abdominal musculature and intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) during controlled dynamic and static trunk muscle loading. Myoelectric activity was recorded in six subjects from the rectus abdominis, obliquus externus, obliquus internus, transversus abdominis and erector spinae muscles using surface and intra-muscular fine-wire electrodes. The IAP was recorded intra-gastrically. ⋯ For single trunk flexions with friction loading, IAP was higher than that seen in extension conditions and increased with added resistance. For inertial loading during trunk flexion, IAP showed two peaks, the larger first peak matched peak forward acceleration and general abdominal muscle activation, while the second corresponded to peak deceleration and was accompanied by activity in transversus abdominis and erector spinae muscles. It was apparent that different loading strategies produced markedly different patterns of response in both trunk musculature and intra-abdominal pressure.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialEffect of one-legged exercise on the strength, power and endurance of the contralateral leg. A randomized, controlled study using isometric and concentric isokinetic training.
The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of one-legged exercise on the strength, power and endurance of the contralateral leg. The performance of the knee extensor and flexor muscle of 20 healthy young adults (10 men and 10 women) was first tested by Cybex II+ and 340 dynamometers. Then 10 subjects were chosen at random to train using one leg three times a week for 7 weeks whilst the other 10 served as controls. ⋯ Untrained hamstring muscle showed better benefits in the endurance parameters than in strength or power parameters, while in the quadriceps muscle this effect was reversed. A positive relationship was observed between the changes (greater improvement in the trained limb resulted in greater improvement in the untrained limb) (hamstring muscles: r = 0.83, P less than 0.001, quadriceps muscle: r = 0.53, P less than 0.001). In endurance parameters, this relationship was almost linear while in the strength and power parameters the results were more in favour of a curvilinear relationship with limited benefit.

Thermoregulatory stress during rest and exercise in heat in patients with a spinal cord injury.
Twelve subjects with spinal cord injuries and four controls (all male) were exposed to heat while sitting at rest or working at each of three environmental temperatures, 30, 35 and 40 degrees C, with a relative humidity of 50%. Exercise was accomplished at a load of 50 W on a friction-braked cycle ergometer which was armcranked or pedalled. Functional electrical stimulation of the legs was provided to the subjects with quadriplegia and paraplegia to allow them to pedal a cycle ergometer. ⋯ As an example, in this group, accomplishing armcrank ergometry while working at an environmental temperature of 40 degrees C resulted in an increase in aural temperature of 2 degrees C in 30 min. The aural temperature of individuals with paraplegia working for the same length of time under the same conditions rose approximately 1 degree C. There was virtually no change in the aural temperature in the control subjects.

The combined effect of the cold pressor test and isometric exercise on heart rate and blood pressure.
The purpose of this study was to determine if the cold pressor test during isometric knee extension [15% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)] could have an additive effect on cardiovascular responses. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures, heart rate and pressure rate product were measured in eight healthy male subjects. The subjects performed the cold pressor tests and isometric leg extensions singly and in combination. ⋯ The responses of arterial blood pressure, and heart rate to a combination of the cold pressor test and isometric knee extension were greater than for each test separately. It is suggested that this additional effect of cold immersion of one hand during isometric exercise may have been due to vasoconstriction effects in the contralateral unstressed limb. In summary, the circulatory effects of the local application of cold during static exercise at 15% MVC were additive.

Body composition and sleeping metabolic rate in response to a 5-month endurance-training programme in adults.
This study examined the effect of exercise training on body composition and sleeping metabolic rate (SMR) in 15 men and 13 women who participated in a 20-week training programme aimed at running a half marathon. Body mass (BM) was measured after waking up, fasted and with an empty bladder. Body composition was assessed using densitometry. ⋯ No changes in SMR were found, either in absolute terms, or when normalised for BM or FFM. Therefore, we have concluded that exercise training has no chronic, long-term effect on SMR. A possible explanation for this outcome in view of the different findings in similar studies is discussed.
