Most patients complaining of dizziness seek medical services in the interictal period, which is thought to be a compensated stage. Thus, we wanted to investigate the results of vestibular function tests (VFTs) at a compensated stage in patients with vestibular neuritis to determine the presence and the sides of vestibular hypofunction. ⋯ Our findings suggest that we can detect vestibular imbalance in patients with unilateral vestibular hypofunction through a set of VFTs even when CP is normal at a compensated stage. The CP side indicated by caloric test was the real affected side when CP was pathologic, even if the results of other tests were normal or rarely indicated that the intact side was pathologic. If CP was within reference range, other tests can show the previous presence of vestibular imbalance; however, they could not predict the side of the vestibular hypofunction. These data provide strong support for enrolling a set of VFT when evaluating a dizzy patient.

To examine the relationship between the amount of change in size and associated hearing in bilateral vestibular schwannomas (VSs) in persons with neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2). ⋯ A significant 1-year change in VS size and hearing occurred in NF2 patients. Clinically, tumor change or hearing deterioration on one VS cannot be used to predict changes in the other VS. This suggests that, although NF2 is a Mendelian disease, the germline genotype-phenotype relationship may resemble that of complex disorders.

To compare tone discrimination, speech perception, and general listening benefit in Mandarin-speaking children using standard HiRes and after 1, 3, and 6 months of HiRes 120 use. The HiResolution Bionic Ear is an implantable prosthesis designed to provide access to sound and to improve perception of speech via electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve. The newest sound-processing strategy is HiRes with Fidelity 120 (HiRes 120). In HiRes 120, the input signal is analyzed in greater spectral detail than with original HiRes to achieve a maximum of 120 spectral bands. HiRes 120 is expected to provide more benefit than the original HiRes because of the increased spectral resolution. ⋯ Taken together, the improved tone discrimination and speech perception results, along with subjective improvements in speech fluency, discrimination, and music appreciation, indicate a trend toward superior listening benefit with HiRes 120 compared with standard HiRes in Mandarin-speaking children.
