Electronic patient records (EPRs) are potentially valuable sources of data for service development or research but often contain large amounts of missing data. Using complete case analysis or imputation of missing data seem like simple solutions, and are increasingly easy to perform in software packages, but can easily distort data and give misleading results if used without an understanding of missingness. So, knowing about patterns of missingness, and when to get expert data science (data engineering and analytics) help, will be a fundamental future skill for emergency physicians. This will maximise the good and minimise the harm of the easy availability of large patient datasets created by the introduction of EPRs.

Trauma accounts for a huge burden of disease worldwide. Trauma systems have been implemented in multiple countries across the globe, aiming to link and optimise multiple aspects of the trauma care pathway, and while they have been shown to reduce overall mortality, much less is known about their cost-effectiveness and impact on morbidity. ⋯ CRD42022348529 LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III.

Joint RCEM and NPIS best practice guideline: assessment and management of acute opioid toxicity in adults in the emergency department.
The Royal College of Emergency Medicine Toxicology Special Interest Group in collaboration with the UK National Poisons Information Service and the Clinical Toxicology Department at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust has produced guidance to support clinicians working in the ED with the assessment and management of adults with acute opioid toxicity. Considerations regarding identification of acute opioid toxicity are discussed and recommendations regarding treatment options and secondary prevention are made. There is a focus on making recommendations on the best available evidence.

The full impact of an acute illness on subsequent health is seldom explicitly discussed with patients. Patients' estimates of their likely prognosis have been explored in chronic care settings and can contribute to the improvement of clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. This scoping review aimed to identify studies of acutely ill patients' estimates of their outcomes and potential benefits for their care. ⋯ The understanding of acutely ill patients of their likely outcomes and benefits of treatment has not been adequately studied and is a major knowledge gap. Limited published literature suggests patients may be able to predict their need for hospital admission. Illness perception may influence help-seeking behaviour, speed of recovery and subsequent quality of life. Knowledge of patients' self-prognosis may enhance communication between patients and their physicians, which improves patient-centred care.
