Background: Many studies manifested miRNA-628 (miR-628) was deregulated in various cancers, indicating that miR-628 might serve as a novel biomarker of cancer diagnosis and prognosis, but it's role was still uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate the value of miR-628 in various cancers for diagnosis and prognosis, as well as its predictive power in combination biomarkers. Materials and Methods: A literature search was performed using Medline (via PubMed), Embase, Web of Science databases, and Ovid platform up to November 2017. ⋯ For the prognostic meta-analysis, patients with lower miR-628 had significant shorter overall survival than high expression of miR-628 (HR = 1.553, 95% CI: 1.041-2.318, z = 2.16, P = 0.031). Conclusions: This study confirms that miR-628 may be a promising biomarker for cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Expertly, microRNAs combination biomarkers could be a new alternative for clinical application.

Background: Our previous studies have demonstrated that human papillomaviruse (HPV)-16 oncoproteins promoted epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), leading to non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) progression, but the underlying molecular mechanisms still remain unclear. PI3K/Akt/HIF-1α signaling pathway has been reported to mediate hypoxia-induced EMT. In this study, we further explored the role of PI3K/Akt/HIF-1α signaling pathway in HPV-16 oncoprotein-induced EMT in NSCLC cells. ⋯ Additionally, pretreatment with LY294002 obviously blocked HPV-16 E6- and E7-induced Snail1, Slug, and Twist1 protein expression in A549 and NCI-H460 cells. Further analysis of clinical specimens showed that HIF-1α protein was strongly expressed in NSCLC tissues, which was positively correlated with ZEB1, Snail1, Slug, and Twist1 protein expression. Conclusions: PI3K/Akt/HIF-1α may contribute to the progression of HPV-associated NSCLC via mediating the expression of EMT-related transcription factors in NSCLC cells.

Background: A modified European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (mENETS) staging system has been confirmed to be more suitable for pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs) when compared to the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) or the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) systems in the last few years. However, the importance of N stage has been recently published with several significant updates. Methods: SEER registry (n = 2,209) was used to evaluate the application of the AJCC 7th staging system, ENETS staging system, mENETS staging system and reformed ENETS (rENETS) staging system in this study. ⋯ Besides, survival curves were better separated by rENETS staging system. A prognostic nomogram for overall survival (OS) was formulated to obtain superior discriminatory abilities. Conclusions: The rENETS staging system has superior distribution in proportion than the AJCC 7th, ENETS or mENETS staging system, and one more accurate and advanced predictive model will be achieved via the incorporation to be adopted in clinical practice.

Purpose: To establish a useful prognostic nomogram to predict long-term overall survival for patients with tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) after R0 resection. Patients and Methods: The nomogram was developed using a retrospective cohort of 235 TSCC patients from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2007. An independent dataset of 223 patients was used for external validation. ⋯ The calibration curve demonstrated that the nomogram was able to accurately predict 5-year overall survival (OS). In addition, our data showed the AUC of the nomogram were 0.78 and 0.71 based on the internal and external validation, which were significantly better than the 7th TNM stage (0.64/0.55). Conclusion: The proposed nomogram resulted in accurate prognostic prediction of the 5-year OS for TSCC patients with R0 resection.

Background: Many studies have shown the prognostic value of inflammation based factors in different cancers. This work aimed to explore the prognostic value of pretreatment C-reactive protein/albumin (CRP/Alb) ratio in patients with cervical cancer, and compared to other inflammatory prognostic factors, such as neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio(NLR), Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS), prognostic index (PI), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), clinicopathological parameter and squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-Ag). Methods: This study was a retrospective analysis of the data related to 229 patients with newly diagnosed cervical cancer. ⋯ Furthermore, CRP/Alb ratio was a superior prognosis factor than mGPS, PI, PLR and PNI in SCC. Moreover, positive correlation was present among SCC-Ag, NLR and CRP/Alb ratio. Conclusions: CRP/Alb ratio might be considered as a novel prognosis factor and combined with NLR could improve the accuracy of OS prediction in patients with cervical cancer as well as its most common histological SCC subtypes.
