The purpose of this study was to identify factors at organizational, team, and individual levels that are most predictive of quality improvement team effectiveness. Numerous studies have been conducted on the use of teams in health care. The majority of these studies have focused on organizational-level issues. ⋯ This study addresses this need by providing a multiple-level analysis of teams in three hospitals. Structured interviews were conducted with hospital administrators as well as quality improvement representatives and team leaders, and written questionnaires were administered to team members. Eight factors were related significantly to the effectiveness of team effort: frequency of team meetings, hours per week conducting team activities, willingness of members to serve on team, selection method of team members, communication of team plans, team member position/composition, team leader performance, and facilitator performance.

Today's health care institutions need employees who are knowledgeable, committed, competent, motivated, and flexible. New management styles, mission statements, and incentives have little impact on these essential characteristics if they are not supplemented with career development programs. This article provides an overview of career development programs and the elements necessary for successful applications of these programs, with an emphasis on the importance of mentoring.

The purpose of this study was to survey pediatric hospital-based staff occupational therapists and their supervisors to determine if they are satisfied when accurate staff job descriptions are reflected in the staff performance appraisals. ⋯ Staff satisfaction with job descriptions and performance appraisals was high. Data regarding content of these documents may provide useful information to department directors who wish to revise their documents and increase employee satisfaction.

With change comes conflict. Conflict can be positive or negative depending on the attitude and skills of the participants. Collaborative conflict is characterized by an approach in which people attack problems rather than each other. Essential components of collaborative conflict resolution include selection of basic technique, preparation for confrontation, and viewing the situation from the other person's perspective.

This article explores strategic planning from the perspective of the health care supervisor. It analyzes the strategic environment of organizations, the planning process, how to evaluate the strategic plan, and the implementation phase. A strategic planning model is offered as well as a view of the future of strategic planning. ⋯ The plan needs to be custom designed for the particular organization. Strategic planning is a primary vehicle for health care supervisors to use work teams to further develop organizational effectiveness. Finally, strategic planning is linked to both research and systems theory.
